No room left on the uniform of Lieutenant General James Glynn (equivalent to Major General): it is decorated with twenty-three different decorations, from the Bronze Star to the Crimson Heart and everything in between. He fought on three continents, liberated Kuwait, ground maneuver in Iraq. This is the man that President Biden sent to Israel in mid-October to "help the commanders of the IDF think about the difficult questions before them."
Today we can already tell more. The general arrived together with two other senior officers to say three words: there is no chance of maneuvering. Galin met with Gantz, Eisenkot, Gallant, Halevi and Netanyahu, and there were warnings based on his experience in fighting in Iraq. The Americans presented data, analyzed analyses, told stories, and their conclusion is one: the goals of the war will not be achieved by ground maneuvers, which will be time-consuming and bloody. The American estimate spoke of up to twenty deaths per day for the IDF forces. The price we have paid since then is heavy, but it is about a tenth of that.
The Americans proposed a targeted operation, with more minor objectives. In one of the discussions, Gantz told them: Your plan is possible if the target is thousands of kilometers from the country, not when the target sits 500 meters from your citizens.
But American security, or rather: insecurity, took its toll. In those days, the glory days of General B. Barik, the city was full of prophets of rage who warned the Prime Minister and the War Cabinet against maneuvering. In that climate, where trust in the IDF was still shattered in the cabinet room, their words fell on attentive ears.
The end is known: Hamas has not yet been decided, but even now there is no other example in modern warfare of what the IDF is doing in the Gaza Strip. It is fighting a monstrous tunnel system and dismantling it piece by piece, eliminating and paralyzing half of the opposing fighting force, capturing targets that were deemed unconquerable. Foreign armies are interested in the air-land-sea combination operated by the IDF.
Last week, both Netanyahu and Gantz alluded to the American warnings of outrage. "There were those who warned us against entering Gaza," said the chairman of the state camp, "but our fighters demonstrate extraordinary determination and ground-breaking abilities in fighting against a terrorist army that will be learned in the world." He did not exaggerate.

אבל הביטחון האמריקני, או יותר נכון: חוסר הביטחון, עשה את שלו. באותם ימים, ימי התהילה של האלוף במיל' בריק, מלאה הקריה בנביאי זעם שהזהירו את ראש הממשלה ואת קבינט המלחמה מתמרון. באקלים ההוא, שבו האמון בצה"ל עוד היה מפוזר לרסיסים בחדר הקבינט, דבריהם נפלו על אזניים קשובות.

בשבוע שעבר רמזו לאזהרות הזעם האמריקניות גם נתניהו וגם גנץ. "היו מי שהזהירו אותנו מלהיכנס לעזה", אמר יושב-ראש המחנה הממלכתי, "אך לוחמינו מוכיחים נחישות יוצאת דופן ויכולות פורצות דרך בלחימה מול צבא טרור שעוד יילמדו בעולם". הוא לא הגזים.
