This is overlooked on how to get a debt collector off of your back

06/03/2026

One of the biggest things that is over looked with debt collectors is you can tell them exactly how to contact you and what time.
Under federal law (FDCPA) for example:

If you tell a debt collector in writing that you only want to be contact on tuesdays 5pm-8pm . Then anything outside of tuesdays from 5pm-8pm would be a violation and you can go after the debt collector and get it off your credit report.
Many people overlook this.

Did you receive a letter from a debt collector?

That’s called a dunning letter — and there can be violations hidden inside it.

Under federal law, debt collectors are required to include specific disclosures and follow strict rules in how they communicate.

Here’s where problems show up:

• Missing or unclear notice of your 30-day dispute rights
• Language that pressures you to pay immediately before your rights expire
• Contradictory statements about disputes or verification
• Misleading amounts, dates, or account details
• Failure to clearly identify the current creditor

These aren’t small issues — they go directly to your rights under the FDCPA.

And most people never check.

If a dunning letter doesn’t clearly explain your rights or tries to override them, that may be a violation.

What to do:
• Keep the letter
• Do not ignore the 30-day window
• Review it line by line

If you’ve received one, there’s a strong chance something was done incorrectly.

If you want help reviewing it, reach out.
