Brooks, Todd & McNeil Insurance

Brooks, Todd & McNeil Insurance KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR INSURANCE NEEDS SINCE 1839 In 1839, he was the first insurance agent to represent the Aetna Insurance Company in Torrington. Gordon C.

The early beginnings of our agency began with George Davis Wadhams (born Jan. 1, 1800 in Cornwall, CT. -died June 11, 1862). He was a very energetic and enterprising person who became involved in many companies, was one of the leading businessmen in Torrington and was a pioneer in manufacturing. In 1861, Isaac W. Brooks (born in Goshen, CT. Nov. 8, 1838 dies 1916) the son of Watts H. Brooks and Ma

ry Wadhams Brooks, was involved in continuing the insurance agency. From 1861 to 1872, Isaac W. Brooks and his brother John W. Brooks were partners in a general merchandise store in Goshen, CT. where they also sold steamship tickets and insurance as a part of the general business. In 1872, Isaac W. Brooks and his brother, John W. Brooks came to Torrington where they established the first and only Banking House known as Brooks Brothers Bank. For twenty-seven years, no other bank was necessary here. It is interesting to note that Isaac W. Brooks and Charles L. McNeil, who established the Burns, Brooks and McNeil Insurance Agency in the mid 1800's, also were among the founders of the Torrington Water Company and the Torrington Electric Company. They built a building for those companies in 1911 at 69 Water Street, which we purchased in 1995 and in which we presently operate. In a sense, we have returned "home". Todd and his partner purchased the Burns, Brooks & McNeil Insurance Agency, from John H. Brooks and Harold J. Burns on December 15, 1980. Stephen G. Todd is now President and Gordon C. Todd is Chairman of the board. Our agency has grown over nine times and we have branch sales offices in Enfield and South Windsor

The vast majority of US homeowners express concern about protecting their homes and personal property, yet large numbers have never verified what their insurance policy actually includes, according to new research from The Hanover Insurance Group.

According to The Hanover's 2026 Home Report: The Coverage Confidence Gap, 90% of respondents are concerned about protecting their homes and belongings, even as significant gaps persist between what homeowners want and what they know they have.

The most common reason Americans don’t have life insurance is cost: About a quarter who don’t have individual life insurance say it’s because it’s too expensive. But it might be cheaper than you think.

Most adults overestimate the cost of life insurance, according to data from Life Happens, an insurance industry trade group. Even the youngest, healthiest consumers think life insurance costs 7 to 12 times more than it actually does.

Cost and timing are factors, but misconceptions about life insurance might be what really stands in the way.

As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season approaches, Connecticut officials said they are prepared in case a storm makes landfall this year.

“We have not had a hurricane make landfall since Gloria in 1985, but we’ve had a number of very close calls and tropical storms that have brought significant change and challenges to our state,” said Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz at a hurricane preparedness briefing in East Haven.

In August 2024, the state experienced an historic rainfall event that caused millions in damages to homes and businesses in towns across the Naugatuck Valley.

While Connecticut may get spared from a hurricane, it can still be impacted by powerful tropical storms and heavy rainfall events, DEEP officials said.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but storms are most common from mid-August through mid-October. Don’t assume your business is safe just because it’s not on the coast. Inland businesses can also suffer major damage from heavy rain, overwhelmed storm drains, tornadoes, and fast-moving floodwater.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will release its annual Atlantic hurricane season outlook on Thursday, May 21. The National Weather Service recently announced an 82% chance that El Niño will begin in the summer of 2026. This natural weather pattern warms parts of the Pacific Ocean, which, in turn, affects the climate across many parts of the U.S.

Many communities, especially coastal communities, may experience heavier rain, high tides, and storm surges, which means homeowners in coastal areas may need an emergency preparation plan for the coming months.

El Niño is expected to begin in summer 2026, bringing heavier rain and storm surges. Prepare your home for extreme weather.
