One of the easiest ways to lower your housing costs in Florida has nothing to do with your loan, and plenty of new homeowners leave the savings sitting on the table. If the home is your primary residence, the homestead exemption can reduce the taxable value of your property and trim your annual tax bill.

There's more to it, too. Once your home is homesteaded, the Save Our Homes cap limits how much your assessed value can climb each year, which protects you when the market runs hot. And if you are moving within Florida, portability lets you carry your built-up savings to your next home. That last one is worth real money and gets missed all the time.
