Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led by example, preaching and living the principles of non-violent activism, community service, and the importance of citizens taking an active role in the issues of their day. These examples are rightly enshrined in a holiday to commemorate the life of this true American leader, and raise up these values which we must continue to live out in our own time.

I share this link today to call attention to the history of this holiday, how it only recently came to be universally recognized, and sadly to the years of opposition against it.

As we celebrate today and contemplate the work that still lies ahead, let us take heart in Dr. King timeless reminder: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
