In honor of , we’re proud to highlight Farm Credit employees involved in dairy production, including loan officer Mary Hammock and her family. Hammock Dairy Inc. was established in 1988 by the Hammock family as a 200-cow commercial operation and has since expanded into one of Virginia’s largest dairies. Today, the operation has a state-of-the-art milking parlor, featuring robotic calf feeders and automatic field equipment to keep the farm as efficient as possible. While Mary is not involved in daily farm operations, she attributes her success and passion for the dairy industry to her family who own and manage the farm. Hammock Dairy is now led by its third generation, with active involvement from the fourth generation.

Please join us in welcoming Melissa Hower to the Farm Credit family. Melissa recently joined our cooperative as an associate accountant and is based at our Verona Operations Center. Her affinity for agriculture stems from her grandparents’ dairy farm in Wisconsin, which has since transitioned into a hunting preserve that raises a variety of birds and waterfowl. She is currently enrolled in an accounting program at Blue Ridge Community College and has spent much of her career in leadership roles with several large retail companies.

Regarding her new role, Melissa shared, “As scary as it can be to begin a new career path, it’s a fresh start. I am excited to learn and grow with a company that invests in its people and is committed to its rural communities. I am looking forward to putting my schoolwork into real life applications and strengthening my skills.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4edyRGn

In 2025, the Virginia Cooperative Extension - Rockingham office received a Charitable Contributions Fund (CCF) grant from Farm Credit of the Virginias to purchase two simulators to use for training both youth and farm workers in low-stress, controlled environments. The extension office used the grant to purchase a calf simulator that can be used for training ear tagging, esophageal tube feeding, castrating and implanting skills. They also purchased a bovine breeder simulator, which will be used to train artificial insemination, palpation and identification of o***y structures. These simulators are excellent training tools to expose youth to opportunities in calf care and bovine reproduction, as well as help train new and existing farm workers to develop their skills. Interested in applying for a CCF grant? The application portal is open through June 30, 2026. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4w5ey4u
