November is Long Term Care Awareness Month, and I talk about it for a lot of reasons, but one of them hits very close to home.

My mom had Alzheimer’s. She spent more than eight years in memory care, and the cost of that care was more than most families could absorb without a plan. We were not unusual. We were just unprepared for how long it would last.

Nobody walks into my office asking about long term care. It is not a fun conversation. It is the one I have watched families wish they had started sooner, more than any other.

The holidays are coming and a lot of us will be sitting across the table from our parents soon. One gentle question opens the door. If you ever needed help at home someday, what would you want that to look like?

You do not have to solve anything, you just have to ask.

The scariest costume we could come up with was not a ghost. It was the two of us, about forty years from now.

Elderly Wonder Woman and elderly Robin. Canes, compression socks, and absolutely no hurry.

Here is the thing though. Every other costume comes off at the end of the night. Nobody actually wakes up a vampire. But everybody wakes up older, and that is the one future you can count on showing up.

So, you may as well plan for that woman in the cape. She may have grandkids to spoil and places to be.

Our Office Managers spent a few days in Fort Worth learning alongside other Office Managers from across the company, swapping ideas, and getting sharper at the work that holds our offices together.

These are the people who answer the phone when you call, track down the form you need, remember your kids’ names, and quietly keep an entire office running. They spent their days in sessions getting sharper at all of it, learning from each other, and swapping the kind of advice you only get from someone doing the same job.

Then they celebrated by putting on cowboy hats and went to Billy Bob’s. You cannot pour into other people all year long without somebody pouring back into you once in a while. Glad they got a little poured back into them.

Military life comes with a language all its own, and understanding it is an important part of serving those who serve.

Some of our Advisors learned it through their own service, while others learned it by working closely with military families and teammates who have lived the experience. We put our newest Advisors to the test, and they passed with flying colors. 👏

On Wednesdays, we wear pink.

And yes, we plan it and show up in pink on purpose, and I would do it again next week too.

Pink makes me think of Dolly. She wore what she wanted, said what she wanted, out worked everybody in the room, and somehow managed to be the kindest person in it too. The sparkle got all the attention, but the work ethic and the generosity underneath it are the real story. She has been inspiring me for years!

Not a bad thing to be reminded of on a Wednesday.

Last week, I was handed an Air Force jersey signed by SEAC Ramón “CZ” Colón-López and Lt Gen Bill Liquori, and I am still a little floored by it.

It was given to recognize my team for the work they have been doing to help Air Force families get squared away financially. To be recognized by leaders like that, for work done on behalf of military families, is about the highest compliment I can think of.

The credit belongs to my team. They are the ones sitting down with families, asking the questions most don’t think to ask themselves, and making sure life does not catch anybody flat footed.

This is the mission I am honored to get to do alongside them.
