Like so many in our community, our hearts are heavy as we see the devastation left behind by the recent fires. We are praying for the families who have lost homes, the firefighters and first responders who have worked tirelessly, and the neighbors who are beginning the difficult process of rebuilding.
If you or someone you know has been affected, here are a few practical steps that may help in the days ahead:
If your home was damaged or destroyed:
• Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to begin the claims process.
• Take photos of any damage before cleanup begins, if it's safe to do so.
• Save receipts for hotel stays, meals, clothing, pet boarding, and other emergency expenses. Many homeowners policies provide reimbursement for these costs.
• If you'll need temporary housing, begin looking for a rental or extended stay accommodations as soon as you're able. Housing availability can become limited after a disaster.
• Start documenting damaged or lost belongings, even if it's just a simple list to begin with.
• Notify your mortgage lender if your home sustained significant damage.
If you'd like to help:
• Consider donating to trusted local relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, Innovia Foundation Wildfire Response Fund, Catholic Charities Eastern Washington, SNAP, or the City of Spokane's wildfire relief efforts.
• Support local businesses that have been impacted.
• Offer meals, temporary housing, childcare, transportation, or other practical help if you're able.
• Check in on neighbors, especially seniors and families who may need extra support.
Spokane has always been a community that shows up for one another. While the road to recovery won't be easy, we know our community is stronger when we come together.
If you or someone you know needs help finding resources, please don't hesitate to reach out. While we may not have all the answers, we're happy to help connect you with organizations and information that may be helpful.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected.
