Happy Independence Day! Here is a historical photo I’ve been thinking about lately - It has hung in our office since 1999 as part of a piece called the “Southport Album,” which is a mosaic of pages from photo albums from our village. The piece was created by Enjd Monroe, an accomplished artist who lived in Southport.

After 27 years on our walls, the frame is in need of repair. While it’s been in my office awaiting repair, this particular photo has been standing out to me for obvious reasons, and making me wonder where this building was! You will notice in the windows the familiar name of Switzer, so it is some predecessor to the Ringel’s pharmacy on Pequot Ave. I went over to Switzers to ask Jerry, and he advised it was likely a since demolished building closer to the harbor.

Thank you to everyone who came together to make this year’s Blessing of the Fleet so special! The parade goes to show exactly what makes our community so special.

The last photo shows Walker Russell on the roof of the Sasquanaug float, getting it ready for the parade.

We had a great time on Thursday night as sponsors of the summer soirée with Andrew and Wendy at their listing at 4 Sherwood Island Lane in Westport. It was a beautiful evening and a perfect setting. Rumor has it that our very own Nick Ruickoldt gave a private concert.

This is Edward “Judge” Russell (left) and his grandson David Russell (right) in 1932. Judge Russell is my great-great grandfather and the founder of The Horseshoe. His son, David Russell, founded Russell Insurance in 1941. David’s son (the David in this photo) grew up to become Chief of the Fairfield Fire Department from 1976-1991.

The home on the right side of the photo is the Robinson Cottage, which was purchased by three years prior in 1929. The home to the left still stands on Rose Hill Road. Judge lived on Main St, and so this photo was taken on his lawn. The second and third photo show the same scene as it is today.
