Getting ready to close on a home? Before you wire any money, make a phone call.

Scammers can send emails that look like they came from your real estate agent or title company, including last-minute changes to wiring instructions.

Call your title company using a trusted number you saved earlier to confirm the instructions. Don’t rely on a new number or link in the email.

If you think you’ve already sent money to a scammer, contact your bank or wire-transfer company immediately and report it at IC3.gov.

Buying a home? Make sure you understand what the appraisal and home inspection each tell you. 🏡

An appraisal provides an opinion of the home’s value for the mortgage process. A home inspection takes a closer look at the property’s physical condition.

The appraisal does not replace an independent home inspection, even if the appraised value comes in at or above your purchase price.

Before you get too far into the process, talk with your Realtor and lender about:
- When to schedule the inspection
- What your contract says about inspection deadlines
- How any repair concerns could affect your financing
