Stop asking, "How much money do I need to retire?"
Start asking, "How much income will I need to enjoy retirement?"
I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say, "I need $1 million before I can retire."
Why $1 million?
For some people, that's more than enough. For others, it might not come close.
The problem is that we've become so focused on reaching a certain account balance that we sometimes forget what that money is actually supposed to do.
Think about it.
If you need $8,000 a month to live comfortably in retirement, and Social Security provides $3,500, your investments need to make up the remaining $4,500.
That's a very different conversation than simply asking whether you've saved enough.
And that's before we factor in taxes, inflation, healthcare, and the unexpected expenses that come with life.
Retirement planning isn't about reaching some magical number.
It's about understanding your expenses, where your income will come from, and how to make your savings last.
Because at the end of the day, you can't pay your electric bill with an account balance. You need cash flow.
That's where a good retirement plan starts.
