"Can I retire?" and "Should I retire?" are two very different questions.

The first one comes down to math. Many Long Islanders save diligently, and the math gets clearer once income and expenses sit side by side.

The second question is harder to answer. It involves timing around Social Security, how an early market downturn could affect withdrawals, and whether the plan holds up if healthcare or property taxes run higher than expected.

At Investment Insight Wealth Management, we often have this conversation with pre-retirees. Sometimes it confirms the plan is on track, and sometimes it helps identify a gap while there is still time to adjust.

Every situation is different. If you'd like a second opinion on your retirement timeline, schedule a meeting: https://www.myinvestmentinsight.com/contact/

📅 Medicare's annual enrollment period opens October 15 and runs through December 7.

Healthcare expenses in retirement can be easy to underestimate. Premiums, out-of-pocket costs, and expenses that Medicare may not cover can add up to a sizeable share of a monthly budget, and those costs may rise over time.

At Investment Insight Wealth Management, we can help build healthcare costs into your retirement plan so the numbers reflect what life on Long Island really costs.

The years right after you stop working, before Social Security and required minimum distributions (RMDs) begin, are often your lowest tax years. That may be a good time to convert traditional IRA money to Roth.

Here's why: you pay tax on it at today's rate instead of later, when RMDs can push your income back up at 73.

How much to convert depends on your tax bracket, your other income, and the effect on your Medicare premiums, so it helps to review it before year-end. The trade-offs are real, though: you owe the tax in the year you convert, the added income can raise your Medicare premiums for that year, and a conversion generally can't be undone. It only works out if the math fits your situation.

Retirement isn't tied to a specific age, but whether your income can support your spending for years to come.

Looking at your expected expenses alongside Social Security, savings, and other income sources can tell you far more than a target age ever will.

Knowing your numbers gives you something much better than a guess. It gives you a plan.

If you have a traditional IRA or 401(k), the government eventually requires you to start withdrawing from it, whether you need the money or not.

These required minimum distributions, or RMDs, currently begin at age 73 for most people. Miss one or take out too little, and the penalty has historically been steep. The withdrawals also count as taxable income, which can affect everything from your tax bracket to how much of your Social Security is taxed.

Planning for RMDs before they begin, sometimes years ahead, is designed to help smooth out the tax impact.

As a physician, do you know where to start when planning your financial future?

Between years of training, a later start on earning, and a busy schedule, many doctors put their own finances on hold. Here's where we help physicians focus:

-> Managing student loans and other debt early
-> Investing consistently, even with a demanding schedule
-> Planning for retirement on a timeline that fits a later career start
-> Reviewing whether your insurance coverage fits your situation
-> Building a personalized strategy with a wealth advisor who understands physician life

These are the planning decisions we work through with physicians.

Every physician's situation is different. This is general information, not personalized advice.

Retirement on Long Island can be costly.

Property taxes don't stop when you retire, healthcare costs change, and the lifestyle you've spent decades building doesn't just get cheaper.

If you want to move past rough estimates and start looking at what your actual expenses might look like, we put together a worksheet to help you map it out: https://go.myinvestmentinsight.com/free-retirement-income-worksheet
