🌌 What happens when a star explodes but doesn't completely die?
Astronomers are uncovering new clues in Pa 30, the remains of a supernova first witnessed by skywatchers in 1181.
Using the Gemini North telescope, researchers discovered enormous, pearl-like knots of gas along strands of debris. Each knot is wide enough to fit Neptune's orbit inside it about ten times!
Even more unusual? A rare "zombie star" sits almost perfectly at the center, suggesting the original explosion was remarkably symmetrical.
🔭 Scientists hope these findings may help identify similar stellar remnants elsewhere in our galaxy.
What other cosmic mysteries might be hiding in plain sight?
"The planetary region of our solar system could fit in each knot about ten times with room to spare."
