Wire fraud stopped being sloppy a while ago. The typos are gone, the emails read clearly, and the FBI's latest Internet Crime Report estimates business email compromise losses above $3 billion in a single year, second only to investment fraud. This is also the first year in the report's history that AI appears as its own crime category.

What that means and why it's important for you and your clients:
• Wiring instructions do not change late in a deal. If they do, assume fraud until proven otherwise.
• Urgency is a tactic, not a deadline. "Send today or lose the house" is a script.
• A confirmation call that sounds exactly right proves nothing now, because anyone's voice can now be cloned from a few seconds of audio.
• Never use contact information provided inside the email itself.

The defense is refreshingly boring. Verify by calling the number you already had, before a single dollar moves.
