🚨 Scam Alert: That SF rental listing may not be from the real landlord.

A San Francisco man lost $18,600 to a fake listing for an apartment he toured in person. The apartment was real. The landlord was not.

Scammers are copying real rental listings from one platform and reposting them as their own on another, collecting money from people who have no idea they are dealing with an impostor.

In this market, renters move fast. That urgency is exactly what scammers count on.

Before you send any money: ask for proof the person is authorized to rent the property. A legitimate landlord can always provide it.

Scammers are impersonating real hotel booking platforms to overcharge travelers by up to 85%, then make refunds nearly impossible to get. City Attorney David Chiu just sued two of these sites, exactly the kind of case StopScams SF was built to support.

"Scams like this don't just drain a traveler's wallet, they wear away the trust San Franciscans place in the people and institutions meant to serve them," said Treasurer José Cisneros. "We launched StopScams SF to protect consumers and bolster the City's defenses against these crimes. The City Attorney's lawsuit sends a clear message to bad actors targeting our residents, businesses, and tourists: San Francisco is fighting back."

Jonah Raskin is 84. He lost $30,000 to a PayPal scam. His story is why San Francisco launched StopScams SF.

San Francisco is now the first city in the country to offer free counseling, scam alerts, and a way to verify a city payment request. Jonah's full story is in the SF Chronicle. Learn more: tinyurl.com/StopScamsSF

San Francisco is rolling out a new initiative to protect residents from scammers — who defraud Americans of billions of dollars annually — through free financial counseling, multilingual public alerts and a verification system to determine if payment requests legitimately come from city government or are part of a scam.

StopScams SF, funded by a three-year, $3 million grant from JPMorganChase, is the nation’s first city-led program of its kind, according to the San Francisco treasurer’s office.

Jonah Raskin, 84, who lost $30,000 from a PayPal scam, is trying to build education about scamming and how seniors can be aware of it.
