Regence member Jeffrey Trela-Hoskins, 26, lives with a rare neurological disorder. When he was discharged from the hospital earlier this year with a new feeding tube, his family was counting on a timely delivery of supplies. But the delivery stalled, and they were down to the last tube feeding.

His mom, Patty, called Regence Care Manager Kimberley S., RN, BSN.

Kimberley identified the hold-up, contacted the provider's clinic and made sure the right people were urgently paged. The next day, Patty called her back. "I don't know what you did, but they're delivering everything we need tonight.”

Kimberley's intervention helped Jeffrey get the right care at the right time. The family avoided another hospitalization and saved an estimated $43,000 in potential inpatient costs.

For Patty, it's about more than logistics. It's about trust. "Sometimes you feel like you're all alone in healthcare, and you're not getting what you need,” she says. Working with a Regence care manager is “like having a friend on the inside."

When a Regence member went to the ER multiple times for chest pains and cardiac testing found nothing wrong, Behavioral Health Care Manager Amy Beitia was able to see what tests couldn’t. She uncovered the real cause of the member’s pain: panic attacks triggered by PTSD.

Beitia connected the member to trauma-focused therapy and a virtual cardiac specialist. The chest pains went away. Healthcare costs went down. And the member reported feeling better than they had in years.

In honor of Older Americans Month, we're shining a light on The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake that is working to enhance the experience of aging within Native communities.

For the 60,000 Native Americans living in urban counties along the Wasatch Front, isolation and loneliness are common challenges when feeling disconnected from cultural roots. Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake offers programs designed specifically for elders, meeting them where they are physically, emotionally and culturally. Weekly classes span traditional meals, wellness workshops, medical education, arts and crafts, and movement activities which draw more than 100 participants each month. We’re proud of our corporate foundation for supporting these programs that improve mental health and strengthen the bonds that hold Native communities together.
