A load that looks unusually good may deserve a closer look before you accept it. Verify broker and carrier contact information at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov rather than trusting whatever comes up in a quick search, confirm the truck and trailer that show up match the contracted carrier, and document equipment and plate information as a matter of habit.

FMCSA warns that fraud and identity theft can involve someone using another carrier's USDOT number without authorization, so a transaction with suspicious instructions or an unusually high rate deserves a second look before you move forward.

If you're leased on to a carrier, do you know which policy is actually covering you at any given moment? Non-trucking, or bobtail, liability provides limited coverage for an owner-operator who's permanently leased to a regulated carrier when they're not under dispatch and not pulling a loaded trailer.

Once you're under dispatch, the carrier you're leased to covers you under its primary liability policy. The gap most people miss is the space between those two situations, since not knowing which policy applies at a given moment can leave you exposed.
