❓ Ask an Agent Friday

Before Fire Prevention Week ends, let's put everything into one quick walkthrough.

🔥 5-Minute Kitchen Fire Safety Check
Can you check all five?

1️⃣ Stove area
Are paper towels, dish towels, packaging and other things that can burn away from the stovetop?

2️⃣ Cooking habits
Do you stay in the kitchen during frying, boiling, grilling or broiling?

3️⃣ Pan handles
Are they turned toward the back of the stove?

4️⃣ Pan-fire plan
Do you have a lid or baking sheet nearby—and does everyone know never to put water on a grease fire?

5️⃣ After-a-loss plan
Do you know who to call and how you'd document damage if a kitchen fire affected your home?

If you found something that needs attention:

Fix it while you're already thinking about it.

Don't just save the checklist.

Walk into your kitchen and do it.

And since it's Ask an Agent Friday:

🧠 MYTH vs. FACT

❌ MYTH:

"Once the fire is out, the first thing I should do is clean up and throw away everything that was damaged."

✅ FACT:

First, make sure everyone is safe and don't re-enter an unsafe area until authorities say it's okay.

If the fire caused property damage and you're considering an insurance claim, document the damage before you begin major cleanup when it's safe to do so.

Take:

📝 Notes about damaged property

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners recommends documenting losses before removing damaged belongings and, when possible, saving damaged items so the insurer can inspect them.

Maryland's Insurance Administration similarly recommends allowing the adjuster or insurance producer to see damaged property before it is removed.

Then:

✓ Contact your insurance company or agent
✓ Keep receipts for necessary emergency expenses or temporary repairs
✓ Take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage when it's safe
✓ Avoid making major permanent repairs before understanding the claim process

The important distinction:
Safety comes first. Documentation comes before major cleanup.

That's something worth knowing before you're standing in a damaged kitchen.

This is one of those things worth knowing before you ever need it.

If a small grease or oil fire starts in a pan, U.S. Fire Administration guidance says:

Don't move the pan.

Instead:

1️⃣ Carefully slide a lid or baking sheet over it
2️⃣ Turn off the burner
3️⃣ Leave the pan covered until it has completely cooled

And one rule worth remembering:

Never put water on a grease fire.
Water can cause burning grease or oil to spread violently.

For families throughout Salisbury and Maryland's Eastern Shore, here's today's simple challenge:

Before you cook tonight:
Find a lid that fits your frying pan and keep it nearby.

Hopefully you'll never need it.

But knowing exactly what to do is much better than trying to figure it out while there's a fire on the stove.

If the fire is spreading or you aren't confident you can safely control it, get everyone outside and call 911.

The doorbell rings.

Someone calls your name.

You remember something in another room.

It's easy to think:

“I'll only be gone for a minute.”

But when you're frying, boiling, grilling or broiling food, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends staying in the kitchen and keeping an eye on what you're cooking.

If you need to leave:

Turn the burner off.

If you're simmering, baking or roasting, check the food regularly and use a timer as a reminder.

Try this tonight:
Before you start cooking:

⏱️ Set a timer
🍳 Stay near high-heat cooking
👀 Watch for smoke or overheating
🔥 Turn the burner off if you need to leave
📱 Don't let your phone become the reason you forget what's on the stove

This isn't complicated advice.

That's exactly why it's easy to underestimate.

Talent gets noticed on game day, but character is what people remember. That's why I love seeing student-athletes recognized for giving back. The 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team features students who have:

🧬 Raised over $10,000 for rare disease research
🎓 Launched a program helping students succeed in school
🧩 Created a nonprofit supporting families affected by autism

The scoreboard may tell part of their story, but these are the achievements that leave a lasting mark. 💙

Don't answer from memory.

Take a look.

Paper towels?

Dish towels?

Oven mitts?

Food packaging?

Wooden utensils?

The U.S. Fire Administration says cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home-fire injuries.

And sometimes the easiest fire-prevention step is simply paying attention to what's sitting around the stove.

Your Monday Challenge:
Stand in your kitchen and look around your cooking area.

✓ Move anything that can burn away from the stovetop
✓ Turn pot handles toward the back
✓ Keep children and pets away from the cooking area
✓ Make sure you have a pan lid or baking sheet nearby
✓ Check that cooking-appliance cords aren't damaged

You don't need a complete kitchen makeover.

Start with the three feet around your stove.

What would you need to move today?
