🎃 Halloween Safety: A Few Things You Might Not Have Thought About!
Halloween is almost here! While reminders about reflective clothing, flashlights, and checking candy are important, the Rock Springs Police Department wants to share a few safety tips that don't always get as much attention.
👻Remember that costumes can make it harder to recognize children.
Snap a quick photo of your children in their costumes. Should you become separated and need assistance locating them, officers will have an accurate picture of what they're wearing that evening.
👻Make sure emergency responders can find your house if needed.
Check that decorations aren't covering your house numbers and that your address is visible from the street. Keep walkways clear of cords, inflatables, and other decorations that could obstruct visitors or emergency personnel.
👻Check around your vehicle before moving.
Children may sit on curbs to sort candy, crouch down to adjust costumes, or gather between parked cars. Take a moment to walk around your vehicle and check your surroundings before backing out of a driveway or leaving a parking space. Drivers should also expect children to cross unexpectedly, including between parked vehicles.
👻Have a backup plan if phones fail.
Older children who trick-or-treat without an adult should know their route, have a designated check-in time, and understand what to do if their phone dies or they become separated from their group. Choose a familiar meeting place ahead of time rather than relying entirely on phone location sharing.
👻Don't let shortcuts create unnecessary risks.
Alleys, vacant lots, and poorly lit areas may seem like convenient ways to reach the next house, but they can make it harder to keep track of children and stay with a group. Stick to familiar, well-lit routes and use sidewalks whenever possible.
👻Teach children what to do if something feels wrong.
If someone makes them uncomfortable, attempts to lure them away from their group, or asks them to go somewhere without permission, they should leave immediately and tell a trusted adult. Report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
👻Know when to call for help.
Don't hesitate to contact law enforcement if a child goes missing or you encounter a situation that presents an immediate safety concern. You do not have to wait a certain amount of time to report a missing child.
Halloween should be a fun night for everyone. A little planning, extra awareness, and looking out for one another can help keep it that way.
