📢 USDA Announces 2026 & 2027 ARC/PLC Enrollment

USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) has announced enrollment dates for the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs.

📅 2026 crop year: Sept. 16 – Dec. 11, 2026
📅 2027 crop year: Nov. 2, 2026 – March 15, 2027

One important change for crop insurance: eligible producers can now purchase Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) and Enhanced Coverage Option (ECO) regardless of whether they elect ARC-CO, ARC-IC, or PLC.

This gives producers more flexibility to combine USDA’s commodity safety-net programs with supplemental crop insurance coverage when building a risk-management strategy for their operation.

USDA has also completed its first nationwide base-acre increase in two decades, adding more than 30 million new base acres.

As harvest season approaches, National Farm Safety & Health Week is a reminder to slow down, stay alert, and make safety a priority on the farm and on the road.

This year’s week-long focus covers equipment and rural roadway safety, health and wellness, generations of farming, confined spaces, and cancer prevention.

🔥 2026 has already made wildfire history in Nebraska.

More than 800,000 acres have burned across the state this year — a record for Nebraska. The Morrill Fire alone burned more than 642,000 acres, becoming the largest wildfire in Nebraska history. (Nebraska Public Media⁠)

For farmers and ranchers, wildfire isn’t just about what happens when the flames arrive. It’s lost pasture, damaged fences, destroyed forage, threatened livestock, damaged equipment and buildings — and months or even years of recovery.

With dry fuels, drought conditions, low humidity and strong winds, a small spark can become a fast-moving wildfire in a matter of minutes.

🔥 We all have a part in preventing the next one.

Before heading out, remember to:

• Avoid burning when conditions are dry, windy or under a burn ban.
• Make sure campfires are completely extinguished — cold to the touch before leaving.
• Be cautious with vehicles and equipment around dry grass. Hot exhaust systems, brakes and machinery can ignite vegetation.
• NEVER throw ci******es or other smoking materials onto the ground.
• Secure trailer chains and make sure they aren’t dragging and creating sparks.
• Check local fire restrictions before burning or working outdoors.
• If you see smoke or a fire, report it immediately.

Nebraska has already seen what a wildfire can do.

🌾 What Could USDA’s Push for More Technology Mean for Producers?

USDA is looking at ways to use technology, including satellite imagery and precision-ag data, to improve how acreage and yield information is collected.

For producers, that could mean less time spent reporting, fewer surprises in USDA estimates, and more accurate information to help inform decisions throughout the growing season.

Technology is changing how we farm — and USDA is looking at how it can change how agricultural data is collected, too.
