Van Leeuwen & Company Our team offers an advanced level of organic wealth management services and benefits to serve your Life Vision. We focus all of our attention on our clients.

Underpinned by a deeply personable touch, the Rembrandt Society represents an exclusive membership service reserved for select clients. What we have learned from our other clients has given us a depth of experience and a breadth of understanding that helps us grasp your unique situation and serve your unique interests. Over the years, we have developed extraordinary expertise by working with a wide range of people, in particular: corporate executives with extensive responsibilities, individuals dealing with loss, non-profits crucial to the community, and those who have made the U.S. their home. We build portfolios by building trust. Many of our clients have been with us a long time, some as long as 20 years. Clearly, performance is critical to such longevity; no one stays with financial advisors who don’t achieve results. But we have learned how important it is to earn the trust of clients early on. We can’t expect you to share personal information with us or allow us to manage your portfolio unless you trust us implicitly. So if for you that means taking it slow, that’s how we’ll take it. If like some of our clients, you want us to confer with others you rely on (lawyers, accountants, other financial advisors, or concerned family members), we are happy to do that. Whatever it takes to earn your trust. We respond promptly, because good communication is vital. When you want to discuss something with us – whether it’s a particular investment or an overall strategy, a concern about the market or a question about how best to finance a major purchase – we respond promptly. If you call, we answer (if we’re on another call, we’ll call you right back). If you want to come into the office to talk or have us come to you, we make that happen. And when we think you need to know something – good news or not such good news; an opportunity or a red flag – we contact you just as fast. Regular meetings and routine updates are important. Good communication is vital. We guide you using our financial expertise. Our client’s goals, objectives and concerns are first and foremost when creating a comprehensive financial strategy; we call this the Total Wealth Advantage. As our client, we evaluate your overall short- and long-term goals and carefully assess the opportunities and risks in addressing these goals. Included in that evaluation, we thoroughly review all of your assets, liabilities, and insurance coverages, as well as use our financial expertise in the areas of estate and trust planning. We are empathetic to the attainment of your goals. With our years of experience, we can help you pursue your vision by assisting to invest and preserve them the way you feel most comfortable, structured and coordinated with our advice and expertise. If any of these five questions give you pause, your estate plan may be doing something you did not intend.

This is one of the first conversations we have with clients approaching retirement.

If you’ve been considering purchasing real estate in Florida, this one’s for you.

Many executives buying in Florida assume 20% down is the right move to avoid PMI. Evan McDonough makes a compelling case that the math does not always support that instinct. On a $700,000 home, 10% down keeps $70,000 working in your portfolio for about $115 a month in mortgage insurance.

When was the last time you looked at your estate plan?

Your kids are adults now. Relationships have shifted. The balance sheet looks different. Estate planning at this stage is not just a paperwork review. Now is a good time to identify whether the people listed in your documents are still the right people for the roles they have been assigned.

Here is what we like to walk through with clients entering this transition.

Around this time of year, our clients heading south for the season often start asking about Florida real estate.

Earlier this year, we recorded a full conversation with Evan McDonough from Family Mortgage covering everything executives should know before they buy real estate in Florida.

The playlist is linked below, and a downloadable guide is available in the YouTube description.

If you have been maxing your deferred comp plan for years and are starting to think about what comes next, take a moment to ask yourself this:

Has anyone on your financial team actually looked at how it pays out if you were to leave?

Deferred comp elections are frequently made early without much guidance, and then they often sit untouched. The contribution gets made, the balance grows, and the distribution election stays exactly where it was set at enrollment. Nobody revisits it because nothing about it demands attention until it suddenly does.

Sorting through the distribution schedule, understanding which options are still available, and making sure the timing fits the broader tax picture is a conversation we regularly have with clients.

If you have not had that review, we are happy to be the starting point. Reach us at vanleeuwenco.com.

The executor was named when the kids were young. The guardian was a sibling you have not spoken to in three years. The trust provisions were written for a balance sheet a fraction of what it is today.

If any of that sounds familiar, it might be time to take another look at your estate plan.

At Van Leeuwen and Company, reviewing these documents is part of our ongoing planning process. We ask the questions that surface what no longer fits. It is rarely a major overhaul, but there are often one or two things that nobody thought to revisit because the original documents felt finished.

If your estate plan has not been reviewed in the last few years, year-end is a natural time to update it. Schedule your year-end review at vanleeuwenco.com.

For executives planning a move to Florida, the six-month rule works the other way around than most people think.

What matters is not how many days you spend in Florida but how many days you spend in the state you are trying to leave. That state will claim you as a resident if you give it the opportunity, and tax you accordingly.

Florida has no minimum number of days required to claim residency. The higher-tax state you are exiting does. That distinction changes how you plan the transition entirely.

Here’s what we walk through with clients before the move down south.

Before someone changes jobs, these are the two questions we ask first.

What are you leaving behind at your current employer, and what are you actually gaining from the new one? The offer letter answers the second question clearly. The first one takes a little more work.

Stock still vesting. A deferred comp distribution schedule. A 401k match that has not fully vested. Getting clear on those details before you make the move means you are deciding with the full picture, not finding out what you missed after the fact.

How do you envision your life when you stop working? That one question is where the planning process actually begins.

Two or three years before retirement is when that question needs a real answer, not an approximation. What does that life actually cost? Travel, time with family, the gifting you want to do while you are still here to see it, healthcare before Medicare arrives.

Here is just a snippet of what we walk through with clients in that window. ↓
