Back-to-school season presents a good opportunity to ensure your kids are equipped with the habits and knowledge to stay safe throughout the school day. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

🔵Make sure your children know their full names, your phone number, home addresses, and how to reach a trusted adult. A laminated safety card kept in their backpack with this info, plus any medical conditions, can be a good addition.

🔵Teach and reinforce proper hand-washing, and remind them not to share food or drink. These simple habits go a long way toward keeping illnesses from spreading through the classroom.

🔵A backpack should weigh no more than 15% of your child's body weight, and both straps should always be used to evenly distribute the load on your child’s back. An overstuffed bag can cause real strain over time.

🔵Talk with your child about bullying — how to recognize it, how to report it, and who their designated trusted adult at school is if they ever feel unsafe or need help.

🔵 Avoid putting your child's first name on the outside of backpacks or lunch boxes; initials or names on the inside are a safer option for labeling belongings.

At-school safety is a collective effort, and taking precautions for your students can help keep students across your community safe.

A headline from today’s news below. Prompts us to give three pieces of advice:

1. The limits of insurance required by our state are $25,000 per person for bodily injury with a max of $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage. That’s not enough. Protect your assets from a law suit and purchase higher limits if you are able. You would be surprised, in some cases, it actually lowers your premium. An umbrella policy is another piece to add for the best protection.

2. Knowing that people could be driving around with these low limits, protect yourself. Purchase uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage to help cover your injuries in an event such as this. Low premium for added protection.

3. If your autos are on a commercial policy, you must schedule the trailers. Trailers are not covered for liability unless they are listed on your policy. Much different than a personal policy. In the article below, the trailer is responsible for the damage. If this vehicle is insured commercially and the owner does not have this trailer listed, there would be no coverage. If he does have coverage, I wonder how much. State limits? Hope not.

NEW DETAILS: Two people were rushed to the hospital Monday after a trailer carrying a side-by-side detached from a pickup on U.S. Highway 26 and was struck by a motorhome.

The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. near Swan Valley, according to Idaho State Police.

Police say a 51-year-old Idaho Falls man was driving west in a 2016 Ford F-350, towing a camp trailer and another trailer carrying a Razor.

The trailer carrying the Razor became detached from the pickup and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

A 79-year-old man from Crestview, Florida, was driving east in a 2020 Winnebago motor home, which was towing a Jeep, when the motorhome struck the detached trailer.

The driver and a passenger in the motorhome were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Their conditions were not released.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, according to ISP.

The westbound lanes of Highway 26 remain blocked while crews investigate the crash.

Before your kids head out the door, make sure they know how to get to school safely, no matter how they are getting there. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

🔵Walking to school? Stick to sidewalks, cross only at crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street, and always walk in a group when possible.

🔵Riding a bike? A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Remind students to ride on the right side of the road with traffic, come to a complete stop before crossing, and choose a route with minimal intersections and light traffic.

🔵Taking the bus? Students should stand at least 6 feet back from the curb when waiting for a bus, wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding, and never walk behind or in front of a bus without making eye contact with the driver first.

🔵Getting dropped off? If you drive your child to school, obey school zone speed limits, follow your school's drop-off procedure, and never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children.

🔵Teen drivers? Review the basics of safe driving. This includes, but is not limited to, having all passengers wear seatbelts, putting devices away while driving, and driving the speed limit.

We hope you find these tips helpful as students transition back to school. As always, if you have any needs or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to our team. We are happy to help.

Wildfire season is here, and ensuring that you and your loved ones are prepared is a crucial step. Beyond memorizing evacuation routes and packing a go-bag, reviewing your homeowners and auto insurance policies can be a key step to help prepare in case the worst were to happen.

That said, it’s a good idea to confirm that your homeowners or renters policy covers fire, smoke, and ash damage, and check your auto policy if you want coverage for your vehicle as well, since that typically falls under a comprehensive auto policy rather than homeowners coverage.

Additionally, look at your additional living expenses limits and ask yourself honestly whether they would cover your costs if you were displaced for several weeks or longer.
