Did you know Medicare can get you a free gym membership? 🏋️

Brad just turned 65, enrolled in Medicare, and one of the first things he used was his OnePass benefit to join Planet Fitness for free. He even upgraded to the Black Card so he can go to any location.

But before you get to the fun perks, you've got to handle the enrollment first. You get a seven month window. Three months before your birth month, the month of, and three months after. Brad's birthday was at the end of the month and his coverage kicked in April 1st.

The process starts at SSA.gov where you can register for Part A and Part B yourself. It's not complicated, but there are steps you need to know about before you dive in.

Can't enroll in Medicare online? You're not alone. 📱

Not everyone has a computer. Some people are rocking a flip phone (no judgment, they're making a comeback). And some folks just aren't comfortable navigating SSA.gov on their own. That's totally fine.
Here's what you do. Call your local Social Security office and set an appointment. They'll walk you through the entire enrollment process. It's what they do all day long.

But here's the catch. Timing matters. If you call right now, you can probably get in within a week. But if your birthday falls near the end of the year during AEP (Annual Enrollment Period), the Social Security offices get slammed. Lead times get longer. And if you're already on a tight enrollment window, that delay can cost you.

So don't wait. Whether you do it online or in person, start early and give yourself breathing room.

The real cost of waiting to enroll in Medicare?

You get a seven-month enrollment window. Three months before your birth month, the month of, and three months after. Sounds like plenty of time, right?

But here's what happens when you wait. Your effective date gets pushed back. And if you're coming off a spouse's employer plan, every month you delay is another month of premiums you didn't need to pay. We see this happen all the time. People assume they have plenty of time, and then one small delay turns into an unexpected expense.

That's exactly what almost happened to Brad. He was coming off his spouse's employer insurance and needed the timing to line up perfectly. One delay could have cost him an extra month of premiums he didn't need.

The fix is simple. Start early. Don't wait until the last minute to begin a process that takes more steps than you'd expect.

Here's something that's tripping people up during Medicare enrollment — two-factor authentication on SSA.gov.

It's not enough to know your username and password. The system sends a verification code to the phone number on file. If you set up your account years ago with a landline you no longer have, you're locked out.

We had a couple come into our office this week with that exact situation. They couldn't authenticate and had to schedule an in-person appointment at the Social Security office just to move forward.

It's a quick fix if you catch it early. Don't wait until enrollment day to find out. Make sure your contact information is current on SSA.gov before you need it.
