WWII military aircrews took great pride in their planes. Many went so far as to name and adorn aircraft’s nose with fantastic artwork.

The artwork, more commonly known as nose art, dates back to WWI, when pilots also personalized the first American military aircraft with painted designs. Crews worked together to paint cartoon animals, people, and slogans on their planes, boosting morale and building camaraderie among servicemembers. Though some crews gave their planes light-hearted names like “Liberty Belle” and “Double Trouble,” their missions were often high-risk against enemy targets.
