Pope Leo XIV appointed Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly as a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life on Aug. 25.

Established in 2016 by Pope Francis, the dicastery promotes the vocation and mission of the lay faithful, the pastoral care of young people, the family and the elderly, and the protection of human life. Its responsibilities also include organizing World Youth Days and support for lay movements and associations throughout the Church. The dicastery is headed by Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, a former state chaplain of Texas.

Today we celebrate the birth of Blessed Michael McGivney, who's simple “yes” to God became a blessing for generations.

As a parish priest, he saw the struggles facing Catholic families and responded with faith, courage, and practical charity. From that vision grew the Knights of Columbus: a brotherhood that continues to serve the Church and those in need around the world.

May we honor his birthday by asking for the grace to recognize the opportunities God places before us and respond with the same generosity.

Born on this day in 1852, Blessed Michael McGivney was the son of immigrants who devoted himself to his love of neighbor through his priestly vocation. As founder of the Knights of Columbus, he inspired his fellow man and successive generations to put their faith into action for their families, parishes, and communities.
