Medicare Part B is the medical insurance portion of Original Medicare that covers outpatient care, doctor services, medical equipment, and preventive services. It is optional and requires a monthly premium based on your income. After meeting the annual deductible, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. To sign up for any supplemental Medicare plan, you must have Part B.

Medicare Part A is the "hospital insurance" portion of Original Medicare. It primarily covers inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospices, as well as limited home health services. It is premium-free for most people who have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
