Put your hand up if you have an old 401k that you don't know what to do with! 🙋‍♀️

Did you know there's a bunch of different options when it comes to "what to do with my old 401k"? My personal favorite is rolling it into an IRA.

And the absolute easiest way to do that?

They'll make sure the rollover is done correctly so you don't have to worry about early withdrawals, penalties or taxes.

But what's even better? They do all the administrative work-- which OMG is what I need in my life.

does anyone else feel like they've been lied to or left out of the club?

I felt like that for such a long time.

Like why did no one stop to explain to me what an IRA was in SUCH simple terms that even a toddler could understand?

Why did no one actually explain to me what a 401(k) was and why I needed to use it-- rather than just telling me to "get my match"?

Why IS it that there's like this coded language around investing to make the average person feel like they need someone else to do it for them cause it's WAY to complicated (when in reality it actually is not)?

It's almost like they don't want us to know :eyes:

Six months later?

Net worth up $29,000.
Maxing her 401k.

Here's how to get $10k/month in passive income by the time you're 65-- so you can retire and be a rich ole lady.

Here's how I'd get to $10k/month in passive income, updated for 2026:

1. I'd open my account at Fidelity (not sponsored for some reason)

2. I'd open up a Roth IRA as long as I qualified (if i didn't-- I'd use a traditional IRA or a backdoor Roth IRA). To qualify you need to make less than $153k MAGI/year if you're single, or $242k if you're married and file taxes together.

3. I’d contribute $7.5k a year to that Roth IRA and then $19.5k a year to my Roth 401(k)-- tax-free growth baby!

4. I’d buy investments like FXAIX or FSKAX so I could be well diversified and at LEAST get started!

Now here’s the thing— you won’t want to be ONLY invested in something like FXAIX or FSKAX— because you want to be really diversified in order to withstand the ups and downs of the market, at any age.

What types— are going to depend on you!

1. I’d open my account up at Fidelity (not sponsored, I just think they’re the best)

2. I’d open up a Roth IRA (as long as I qualified— if you’re single and making less than $153k MAGI or if you’re married and making less than $242k MAGI— you should qualify!)

3. I’d contribute $625 a month to that Roth IRA so I could max it out for the year and get tax free growth!

4. I’d buy investments like FXAIX so I could be well diversified and at LEAST get started!

Now here’s the thing— you won’t want to be ONLY invested in something like FXAIX— because you want to be really diversified in order to withstand the ups and downs of the market, at any age.

Remember— even if you’re 50+ and don’t have $1.5k a month to invest— every bit counts.

Every bit helps and every bit matters.

REMEMBER: Some money in the future is better than NO money in the future.

I don’t want this to discourage you— but I want to give you realistic information so you can at the very least see how important it is to get started— no matter how much you have to start.

Now— keep in mind. FSKAX is just a starting place— you won’t want to ONLY be invested in FSKAX because you need to be diversified.

What other types of investments you’ll buy will depend on you!
