October is closer than it feels.

And every year around this time I start making sure the people in my community have what they need before AEP gets loud and decisions start feeling rushed.

There's a headline going around about Medicare Part D that's making people panic, so let's slow down for a second.

If you saw it and felt your stomach drop, I get it. Nobody wants a surprise cost showing up, especially when you're on a fixed income and prescriptions are already a stretch.

Here's what's actually happening: the government is ending a temporary program that's been propping up drug plan premiums for the last two years. That's it. It's not your coverage disappearing, and it's not the whole law changing. It's one piece of a much bigger picture that headlines are flattening into "Medicare costs are going up."

What hasn't changed: your $2,400 yearly cap on covered drugs, the limit on how fast your base premium can climb, and your coverage if you're on Medicare Advantage. We won't even know real 2027 numbers until September.

The name says it all really.

Medigap. As in the gap that Medicare leaves behind.

Original Medicare is incredibly valuable. But it was never designed to cover everything. There is the 20% that you owe after Medicare pays its share. There are deductibles. There are costs that add up fast if something serious happens. And unlike most insurance, Original Medicare has no out of pocket maximum to protect you.

That gap is real. And supplemental coverage exists specifically to fill it.

Here is the simple version of how it works. ⬇

A Medigap plan , also called Medicare Supplement plan, is a separate policy that works alongside Original Medicare. It helps cover some or all of the costs that Medicare does not pay. Depending on the plan you choose, that can mean significantly less coming out of your pocket when you actually need care.

This is one of my favorite things to explain over {coffee / at the kitchen table / on a call} because once people understand it, everything about Medicare starts to make more sense.
