The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an ongoing scam involving individuals who claim to be collecting money on behalf of inmates incarcerated at the Cleveland County Detention Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
In this scam, callers contact family members or acquaintances of an incarcerated person and claim that payment is required for the inmate’s bond, an ankle tracking monitor, or other expenses associated with their release.
The scammers are requesting that money be sent electronically, including through Zelle.
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office:
❎ Does NOT accept bond payments through Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, or any other person-to-person electronic payment service.
❎ Does NOT call an inmate’s family members or emergency contacts to arrange payment of a bond.
❎ Does NOT request electronic payment for ankle monitors or other release-related expenses over the telephone.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office or Cleveland County Detention Center and they request that you send money electronically, do not send any money and do not provide personal or financial information.
Scammers can make telephone numbers and caller ID information appear legitimate. Do not rely solely on caller ID to determine whether a call is genuine.
Anyone who has a family member incarcerated and has questions regarding bond or release procedures should independently contact the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office or Detention Center using an official telephone number obtained from an official Cleveland County source.
Please share this information, particularly with anyone who currently has a family member or loved one incarcerated at the Cleveland County Detention Center.
