Here are a few fun facts about the United States flag that might surprise you:

• The current 50‑star design was created by a 17‑year‑old student whose high school project eventually became our national flag.
• There have been 27 official versions of the flag, most reflecting the growth of our country as new states joined the Union.
• Red, white, and blue were chosen with purpose — representing hardiness and valor, purity and innocence, and vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
• Six American flags were planted on the moon during the Apollo missions.
• Today’s 50‑star flag is the longest‑running design in U.S. history.
