October is Fire Prevention Month, and it's an important reminder that staying prepared can make all the difference. With a home structure fire reported every 96 seconds in the United States, reviewing safety basics is always worthwhile.
Here are a few key tips our team encourages you to revisit this season:
• Understand the leading causes. Cooking and heating remain the top sources of home fires. Keep a close eye on anything on the stove, maintain safe distances around heat sources, and regularly check cords for damage.
• Test your smoke alarms. Make sure alarms work properly, replace batteries once a year, and replace any unit that is more than 10 years old.
• Create and practice an escape plan. Ensure every room has two exit routes, confirm windows and doors open easily, and agree on a designated outdoor meeting spot.
• Review how to use a fire extinguisher. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. If you're unsure or the fire is spreading, get out and call 911.
• Build safer everyday habits. Never leave heaters or fireplaces unattended, keep matches and lighters secure from children, avoid overloading outlets, and turn off appliances before leaving or going to bed.
Fire prevention is something we all share a role in. Local fire stations remain excellent resources if you have safety questions.
