Happy Juneteenth! Also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021. Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States, is celebrated annually on June 19th, marking the day 160 years ago in 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom. The news arrived more than two years after the issuance of the final Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order by President Abraham Lincoln, which had declared slaves in Confederate states free.
The significance of Juneteenth continues to grow as some Americans, hell-bent on maintaining the falsehood of white supremacy, push to dilute and erase the history of a brutal and pervasive institution that lasted for over 246 years, from 1619 until its abolition in 1865, with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to our Constitution.
It is imperative that a free and just society recognize the irreparable damage done to so many of its citizens' ancestry, followed by nearly 100 years of unjust Jim Crow segregation laws, and the discrimination that ensued, and is too often allowed to still fester today.
If you've read this far, I urge you to join me in sharing the events in our history that land us at this moment in time. Only when we acknowledge the errors of the past, and their effects on the present, can we begin to move toward a more perfect union.
