If we had to leave home quickly, could Remy and I be out the door with everything he needs?

That question made me realize he needed his own emergency plan.

So I put together the essentials I want ready before there’s ever a reason to scramble, including a few things I probably would have forgotten.

And although hurricanes are what we prepare for in Miami, this works anywhere you may need to leave home quickly with your dog.

A short menu, a small room, and the warmest service I have had in a long time.

I grew up in Montreal having Chinese food every Sunday, so I come to a place like this with a lifetime of comparison behind me.

Double Luck is off the beaten path, and that is part of the charm. Walking in, the room is intimate and a little sultry, the kind of place that makes you sit up a bit straighter. The question, of course, was whether the food would live up to the atmosphere. It did, completely.

What I did not expect was that the service would be the thing I talked about all the way home. Attentive, cheerful, genuinely glad we were there. Water glasses never sat empty. A thank you as we left. Small things, and they added up to a night that felt looked after.

The menu is small but mighty. Short ribs that fell off the bone. Mushroom dumplings. Duck bao buns. I can’t wait to go back and try other foods on their menu. A fun, well chosen list of wines and beers. Even with my picky likes and dislikes, I had no trouble finding something I loved, and the portions were generous enough that leftovers came home with us.

One more thing worth mentioning, because so few restaurants get it right: the acoustics. We could hear each other. We had a real conversation. That alone would bring me back.

Casual, delicious, and beautifully run. Double Luck holds up. Bring someone you actually want to talk to.
