Tonight marks the start of our brand new small group at church on the concept of financial stewardship. Absolutely pumped about it. (Has nothing to do with my practice, but everything to do with God's call on my life.)

Our study is going to be focusing on the book "God Owns It All" by Ron Blue, and we're essentially going to be doing an overview of what God's Word has to say about money.

Mr. Ron has said many times in his books and various talks over the years that his desire (and now mine) is to see the Church become the foremost authority on financial wisdom.

And you have to ask, why isn't it already? The Bible is not a new concept by any stretch of the imagination.

Talking about money in church is one of those subjects that make folks uncomfortable, pastors and congregants alike. Many churchgoers have a tendency to view churches talking about money as self-serving, and many (definitely not all) pastors are aware of that and avoid the subject altogether.

To our own detriment.

The reality is that our financial life is not exempt from the Lordship of Christ in our lives. In fact, it is one of the most spiritually significant parts of our faith.

Billy Graham wrote this years ago: “Tell me what you think about money, and I will tell you what you think about God, for these two are closely related. A man’s heart is closer to his wallet than anything else.”

He's right, and I can prove it in my own life. I put my trust in Christ with eternal salvation years ago, but it wasn't until fairly recently that I felt the conviction to trust Christ fully with my financial life as much I trusted Him with my eternity. The last few years of that journey have seen the most significant leaps in my joy, my peace, my contentment, and ultimately my love for Christ.

That's the point. It's not about the money. It's all about Christ.

This week, I had the chance to attend the Edward Jones Faith and Finance Forum hosted at the iconic Billy Graham Library.

It was a privilege to deep dive into our Faith-based investing capabilities at Edward Jones and explore in depth how we can better serve clients through Biblical financial wisdom.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many like-minded Edward Jones advisors who are passionate about making their practice their ministry!

Before we ask what to do with wealth, we should ask who owns it.

Biblical stewardship begins with the belief that God owns it all. We are responsible for faithfully managing what He has entrusted to us.

That starting point changes the financial conversation.

Wealth is no longer measured only by how much has been accumulated. Financial decisions become connected to responsibility, generosity, contentment, provision, and purpose.

This doesn't lead every person to the same decision. Biblical wisdom requires discernment, prayer, wise counsel, and careful attention to each person’s circumstances.

But the central question remains the same:

--> How can I faithfully manage what belongs to God?

That question can reshape how we think about earning, spending, giving, saving, and investing.

The Bible on Money:

"Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in an abundance of his possessions." - Luke 12:15 (Parable of the Rich Fool)

This verse precedes one of my the most profound and sobering parables in all of Scripture. Jesus tell the story of a wealthy man who continued to store up more and more treasure on Earth, only for his life to be called away from him in an instant. Here's the passage:

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:19-20)

What good did his wealth do for him then? Did it bring security? Did it bring him joy or happiness? In the end, we can see that it didn't, and it never could. Because those things are only found in on place:

in Christ.

Jesus is clearly telling us that this man's definition of "rich" missed the mark entirely.

To reiterate my point from last week and a key central them about money in Scripture: money and wealth isn't meant to build higher walls of false security or bigger barns for ourselves, it's meant to be the extension of God's love and generosity to the world around us.

Lord, may we be rich towards You and the things you deem good, right, and true and be the conduit of blessing to this world that You love!

I hope this encourages somebody today.

The Bible on Money:

"You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day." - Deuteronomy 8:18

This verse speaks to a fundamental concept of stewardship: not only does our wealth and resources ultimately belong to the Lord, but the very ability to build wealth and acquire those resources also comes from Him.

The point is God is not anti-wealth (looking at you, Poverty Gospel). Profit is affirmed in the Bible, as we can see. The real difference in the Biblical view of money is that the profit has a purpose and it's bigger than just growing wealth for wealth's sake (looking at you, Prosperity Gospel)!

250 years ago, a group of visionary men declared the birth of a brand new nation, one built on a set of ideals that are not the brainchild of any man, but on truth that is "self-evident" in the fabric of Creation.

It was these ideals, among them the acknowledgement of the unalienable Rights endowed by our Creator, that would would become the foundation of the beacon of hope and liberty that America has grown to be.

I believe that Almighty God was with those men in those days, and many who were there would agree. If you don't believe that, consider this prayer from Jacob D***e at the onset of the First Continental Congress in 1774 -

“O Lord, our Heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of kings and Lord of lords, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers on earth, and reignest with power supreme and uncontrolled over all kingdoms, empires and governments, look down, we beseech thee, on these our American States, who have fled to thee from the rod of the oppressor, and thrown themselves on thy gracious protection, desiring henceforth to be dependent only on thee – to thee have they appealed for the righteousness of their cause – to thee do they now look up for that countenance and support which thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, Heavenly Father, under thy nurturing care, give them wisdom in council, and valor in the field. Defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries. Convince them of the unrighteousness of their cause, and if they still persist in their sanguinary purpose, O let the voice of thine own unerring justice sounding in their hearts constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle. Be thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable Assembly. Enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundation, that the scene of blood may be speedily closed – that order, harmony, and peace may be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety may prevail and flourish amongst thy people. Preserve the health of their bodies and the vigor of their minds. A prayer I repeat as I think about the next 250 years, or however long the Lord tarries.

One of my favorite figures from the Bible is one that is often overlooked, if known about at all.

Towards the end of Exodus when God commands Moses to construct the Tabernacle, we read about a man named Bezalel and it says this:

Ex. 35:31: "The Lord has filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.

Did you catch that? A master craftsmen being filled with the Spirit of God (not to mention this is the first time we see this phrase used in Scripture).

Bezalel was called by God and endowed with great skills to build a magnificent Dwelling Place for Him to be able to be among His people. What an honor.

I'm encouraged by Bezalel's story because among many other things we can draw from it, it shows that being used by God and filled with His Spirit is not reserved only for those in traditional pastoral ministry, (though that is extremely important), but can appear in the lives of:

Builders.
Innovators.
Designers.
Craftsmen.
Entrepreneurs.
Investors.
Financial Advisors.
Business leaders.
Artists.
Etc.

We're seeing a revival in the marketplace happening as we speak, as those with all manner of skills and gifts are devoting their lives and talents back to God for use to advance His Kingdom in ways many won't expect.

I encourage you all to read more of Bezalel's story and be inspired to bring your talents, gifts and passions to God as an act of worship and watch what He does with them.

To paraphrase, the way to a man's heart is through his.......wallet?

Whether it's how we save, how we invest, how we spend, or how we give, how we handle money is a testimony to who (or what) reigns supreme over our lives.

The call to stewarding God's money, God's way is not prohibitive to the "good life" as the world around us would define it as.

What those folks don't realize (until they do) is that a life committed to being a faithful steward of God's financial resources dramatically redefines what the "good life" is.

How do we know? From Jesus himself:

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!"- Matthew 13:44-46

God's way is the best way. Hands down.
