After years of working with business owners, I probably have a few accountant habits that aren't exactly normal. 😂
Here are three:

1. I actually enjoy looking at financial messes.

Not because I enjoy the chaos.
But because behind every messy set of books is usually a story.

A business grew faster than expected.
Someone was trying to do everything themselves.
Life happened.
And suddenly, the bookkeeping became "something I'll deal with later."
I get it.

2. I will probably ask you more questions than you expected.
Because numbers rarely tell the whole story.
I can see a transaction.
But I need context.
The story behind the numbers matters just as much as the numbers themselves.

3. I get genuinely excited when a tax strategy works.
Probably more excited than a normal person should get about spreadsheets. 😂

But there is something incredibly satisfying about helping a business owner understand their finances and make better decisions moving forward.

So yes.

I might be a little weird about numbers.
But after all these years, I think that's why I still love what I do. 🤍

It’s easy to pick a revenue goal that sounds good.

“I want to hit $10K months.”
“I want to double my revenue.”
“I want to make six figures.”

But before setting the number, ask yourself:

What does your business actually need to make?

Look at your expenses. Your taxes. Your payroll. Your profit goals.

Because revenue is just a number.

Understanding what that number needs to support? That's where strategy begins.

Save this before setting your next business goal. 📌

The value you bring isn't always something you can put into a spreadsheet.

Experience. Perspective. Strategy. Solutions.

Never underestimate what you bring to the table.

One thing I’ve learned from working with business owners:

The numbers don't always tell you how hard someone has worked to get there.

There are months when revenue is up but you're exhausted.

Months when the business is growing but you're worried about cash flow.

Months when everything looks fine from the outside… while you're questioning every decision you've made.

That's part of building something of your own.

So yes, look at your P&L.
Check your cash flow.
Plan for your taxes.
Make the smart financial decisions.

But don't forget to look at your progress, too.

Maybe you're not where you want to be yet.

But if you're making better decisions than you were a year ago, understanding your numbers more clearly, and building something that didn't exist before…

You're doing better than you think. 🤍

And sometimes, that's the reminder a business owner needs.

I chose accounting for the numbers, but I stayed because of the people.

Behind every business, tax return, and financial statement is someone trying to make important decisions.

Being able to bring clarity to something that can feel overwhelming is one of the things I value most about what I do.

Accounting is about numbers. But the work has always been about people. 🤍

Paying for professional tax advice is an expense.

But so is overpaying taxes.

So is discovering mistakes after they've already become costly.

And so is running a business without a clear understanding of your numbers.

The goal isn't to spend money unnecessarily.

It's to make informed decisions before they become expensive ones.

One thing I wish more business owners looked at before making a big purchase:

The monthly payment isn't the whole story.

You also need to consider:

→ Cash flow
→ Interest
→ Tax treatment
→ Business vs. personal use
→ Depreciation
→ Your existing debt
→ What the purchase does to your ability to invest elsewhere

And yes, sometimes buying the equipment or vehicle is absolutely the right move.

But the question shouldn't only be:

“Can my business afford the payment?”

Ask:

“Does this purchase make financial sense for my business?”

That's a very different question.

Your accountant shouldn't just tell you what happened last year.

Your numbers should help you make better decisions this year.
