In Texas auto insurance, both Medical Payments (MedPay) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) are first-party coverages that can help pay after a car accident regardless of who was at fault, but they are different in scope and statutory treatment. You cannot carry both MedPay and PIP on the same policy vehicle — Texas insurance typically lets you choose one or neither (if you reject both).

🚑 Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)
• Optional: Insurers are not required to offer MedPay in Texas, and you can choose whether to buy it.
• Pays medical (and sometimes funeral) costs: It reimburses reasonable medical expenses from an auto accident, up to the limits you select.
• Does not cover lost income: MedPay typically does not pay for lost wages, essential services, or other non-medical costs.
• Time and scope limits: Some policies limit reimbursement to expenses incurred within a year and may only cover certain treatments; it doesn’t automatically include things like chiropractic care.

📄 Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
• Offered to all drivers: Texas law requires insurers to offer PIP with policies; you must reject it in writing if you don’t want it.
• Broader benefits: PIP covers:
• Medical and funeral expenses from an accident (like MedPay).
• Lost wages — usually about 80% of income you lose while unable to work.
• Essential services (e.g., household help if you can’t perform them).
• Coverage period: It typically covers expenses incurred within a longer period (often up to 3 years from the accident) than MedPay.
