Protect Yourself from P2P Payment Scams

Apps like Zelle, Venmo, Cash App and other peer-to-peer payment services make sending money fast and convenient — but scammers take advantage of that speed too.

Common scams include phishing texts or emails pretending your account is locked, unauthorized transfers after someone gains access to your account, and “accidental payment” scams where a stranger sends you money and asks you to send it back.

A few important ways to protect yourself:

* Only send or accept payments from people you know and trust.
* Double-check the recipient’s phone number or username before sending money.
* Never click unexpected links asking you to verify your payment account.
* Keep your banking and payment apps updated and use multi-factor authentication.
* If a stranger sends you money “by accident,” do not send it back yourself. Contact the payment app directly.
* Report suspected fraud to your financial institution and the payment platform immediately.
* Never provide your bank account information, passwords, verification codes or other sensitive information to someone who contacts you claiming to be customer service.

Think of P2P payments like cash: once you send the money, getting it back can be difficult.

Stay alert, slow down before sending, and always verify who you are paying.

🚨 SCAM ALERT FOR POLAM MEMBERS 🚨

Scammers are increasingly pretending to be banks and credit unions — and they can even make your caller ID look like the call is really coming from your financial institution.

They may tell you there is suspicious activity on your account, an unauthorized transaction, or another urgent problem and then ask for personal information, a verification code, password, PIN, or payment.

Please remember:

• Never give out your online banking password, PIN, verification code, Social Security number, or other sensitive information to someone who unexpectedly contacts you.
• Do not trust caller ID alone — phone numbers can be spoofed.
• Never allow someone to pressure you into acting immediately.
• If a call or text claims to be from POLAM and something does not feel right, stop and contact us directly.

🚨 QR CODE SCAM ALERT: THE PARKING METER TRICK
A recent QR code scam shows just how easy it is to be fooled.
Scammers placed a fake QR code sticker over the payment code on a parking meter. Drivers thought they were paying for parking. They scanned the code, were taken to what looked like a legitimate payment page, and entered their card information.
But they weren’t paying for parking—they were giving their information to scammers.
What makes this scam especially dangerous is that no suspicious text, email or phone call is involved. You find the QR code yourself, on a machine you already trust.
Before scanning a QR code in a public place:
• Look closely to see whether a sticker has been placed over the original code.
• Preview the website address before opening it.
• Never enter financial information if the website looks unfamiliar or suspicious.
• When possible, go directly to the official website or app instead of scanning the code.
And remember: this isn’t limited to parking meters. Fake QR codes can be placed on restaurant tables, EV charging stations, signs, flyers and other public locations.
🔒 A QR code may look official simply because of where it’s placed. Always check before you scan.

Why I Love My Credit Union
I review financial statements, strategic plans, budgets, and regulations every day.
But that's not what reminds me why I love credit unions.
It's the member who comes back years later just to say, "Thank you."
It's seeing a child open their very first savings account.
It's knowing that every success story started with someone who took the time to listen instead of simply saying "no."
It's the hug they get when they come in with a death certificate and then being asked to come to the service.
It's being one of the first to see the engagement ring because we helped finance it and then see their family grow.
That is the heart of the credit union movement.
For more than a century, credit unions have quietly changed millions of lives—not because they had to, but because they were created to serve people.
I'm honored to be part of that mission every single day.
