When my girls were little, I always told them that when we were out, we needed to be able to see each other.

If they hid in a clothing rack and could see me, but I couldn’t see them, that was a problem. “Can you see Mommy?” was very different from “Can we see each other?” If they were in the toy aisle and I could see them but they looked up and couldn’t see me, they would be scared.

This Operation Shamrock story below hit me the same way.

When we ask a loved one experiencing a romance scam, “Do you know the person you’re wiring money to?” they will say yes. They believe they know this person. They talk regularly. They may be planning a future together.

This isn’t a stranger to them. This is their future partner.

How we phrase our questions is SO important:

“How did you meet?”
“How long have you known each other?”
“Have you met in person, or do you communicate by phone or video?”
“Are they helping you invest?”
“What is the money being used for?”

Even video calls don’t establish that someone is trustworthy. We need to ask follow-up questions gently, without demeaning the relationship they believe they have.

We want them to keep talking to us, not feel embarrassed or judged.

🥟 Pick your favorites: potato and cheese, sauerkraut and mushroom, meat—or fruit for a sweet finish!

🛒 Gather the toppings: butter, sautéed onions, sour cream, or crispy bacon. Don’t forget something sweet for dessert pierogi!

👩‍🍳 Make it a family affair: bring out Babcia’s recipe, invite friends to help fill and pinch, or stock up on your favorite ready-made pierogi.

October is Polish American Heritage Month! 🇵🇱🇺🇸

At POLAM Federal Credit Union, we’re celebrating the heritage, families, and communities that have connected Poland and America for generations — and we want to celebrate our members, too.

Throughout October, qualifying POLAM members can receive ONE FREE outgoing international wire to Poland.

To qualify, you must have either:
• A POLAM checking account with at least $500 in direct deposits within the last 30 days, OR
• A POLAM auto loan, mortgage, or HELOC that has been open for at least six months and is current.

The account holder must be the sender/remitter. The fee waiver is personal and non-transferable. Standard POLAM international wire requirements continue to apply, and fees charged by other banks, foreign institutions, or for currency conversion may still apply.
