🏡 A Special Opportunity to Become Part of POLAM’s New Home 🏡

As construction on our new POLAM Federal Credit Union building continues, we would love to invite our members to be part of its history in a unique and meaningful way.

We are inviting anyone who would like to participate to write a note, memory, message, prayer, wish, or thought to be placed inside the walls of the new building before they are drywalled. Your note can be sealed if you wish — they will not be opened or read.

This building is more than just a building — it is the home of our credit union and the heart of our community. We thought it would be beautiful to leave behind little pieces of the people who helped make POLAM what it is today.

I was recently asked to reflect on my “why.” Why I do what I do after all these years in the credit union movement.

The truth is, it made me stop and think.

In a world that feels increasingly driven by profit, convenience, and transactions, I sometimes wonder if people still value what makes credit unions different. Relationships. Community. Compassion. Knowing your name instead of just your account number.

For more than 27 years, I’ve believed deeply that credit unions matter because people matter. That there should still be places in the financial world where ethics come before profits and where members are treated like family, not customers.

Lately, I’ve caught myself wondering whether the world has changed too much. Whether small credit unions and small businesses still have a place in a society focused on “bigger” and “faster.”

But then I think about the moments that matter most — when someone loses a job, faces fraud, needs help, or simply needs someone to listen instead of reading from a script. That’s when the value of a credit union becomes real.

Most people don’t think about what they have until it’s gone.

So maybe my “why” hasn’t changed after all.

Maybe it’s simply this: to continue protecting and preserving something worth saving. A place where kindness still matters. Where relationships still matter. Where people still matter. Where doing the right thing matters and doing the wrong thing has consequences.

Thank you to the members who continue to believe in that mission with us. You are the reason we keep fighting for it every day.
