Retirement is often treated like a math problem. But for many people, that’s not where things get difficult.

The real challenge? Figuring out who you are when work is no longer the center of your life.

We’ve seen it time and again, especially with successful professionals. The finances are in place. The plan looks solid.

But once the structure, routine, and daily sense of purpose are gone…it can feel unexpectedly disorienting.

That’s why we encourage clients to think beyond a single “retirement date” and start designing what comes next:

• Income you can trust
• Purpose you can feel
• Confidence you can sustain

After decades of building a career, the next chapter shouldn’t feel uncertain. It should feel intentional.

If you’re starting to think about what retirement really looks like, we share a few guiding principles here: https://hcrwealth.com/retirement-by-design-creating-income-purpose-and-confidence-beyond-work/

10/21/2026

You don’t need to be rich to be intentional with money. A strong money mindset isn’t about hitting a certain income. It’s about making thoughtful decisions with what you have today.

Working towards finding a balance between spending, saving, investing, protecting, and giving.

You don’t have to master all five overnight. Start with one step, then build from there as your finances evolve.

What can happen to your portfolio when stocks and bonds both come under pressure?

September offered a reminder that markets can be influenced by several forces at once. Rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and geopolitical uncertainty weighed on investments, even as corporate earnings remained resilient.

Here are 4 takeaways from September’s market:

1. Higher yields pressured bonds.
The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to nearly 5.3%, while the U.S. bond market declined 2.6%. Rising yields can lower existing bond prices and increase borrowing costs for businesses.

2. Not all stocks experienced the same pressure.
The S&P 500 declined 0.3%, while smaller U.S. companies fell 5.3%. Companies that rely more heavily on debt can be especially vulnerable when borrowing costs rise.

3. The AI boom is creating opportunities + risks.
Investment in AI continues to support growth, but rising costs and increased borrowing raises the question of whether future profits will justify today’s spending.

4. Diversification remains important.
No single investment performs well in every environment, which is why having exposure across different areas of the market can help manage risk.

While market volatility can be uncomfortable, it reinforces the value of understanding what you own and why you own it.

A family wants to give $50,000 to charity before year-end.

They could simply write a check. But they may also have other options: donating appreciated securities, contributing to a donor-advised fund, or coordinating their giving with their broader tax and investment strategy.

While the charitable impact may be similar, the financial consequences may not be.

For high-net-worth families, charitable giving can be an important part of a broader wealth strategy. The right approach may depend on what you give, when you give it, which assets you use, and how the decision fits with your overall financial plan.

The timing, funding source, and structure of a charitable gift can matter just as much as the amount.

At HCR, philanthropic planning is part of our holistic approach to wealth management. We help families integrate charitable giving with their broader financial, tax, and legacy goals.

High-earning business owners, are you leaving money on the table when tax season comes around?

Here are five smart tax planning strategies to help you keep more of what you earn:

1️⃣ Help reduce tax liability while reinvesting in your business.

Maximize contributions to retirement plans (like a 401(k) or traditional IRA) to lower taxable income. In addition to increasing retirement savings, you can free up more capital to grow your business.

2️⃣ Build tax-free income streams for the future.

Use Roth IRA or Roth 401(k) contributions strategically to diversify your tax exposure and create a pool of tax-free retirement income. This can help give you flexibility when you’re managing income from your business later on.

3️⃣ Double the impact of your charitable giving.

Use advanced charitable giving strategies—like donating appreciated assets or setting up a Donor Advised Fund—to help reduce taxes in high-profit years, while supporting causes that align with your values.

4️⃣ Turn market volatility into a tax advantage.

Apply tax-loss harvesting strategies to counterbalance capital gains. Sell an investment that’s lost its value → replace with a similar investment. This can help reduce tax liability in strong income years and improve overall investment returns.

5️⃣ Optimize your finances based on your tax bracket.

At higher income levels, small decisions may have bigger tax consequences, like choosing between municipal vs. taxable bonds and tracking taxes owed on dividends. Understanding your tax bracket helps you time income, deductions, and investments more strategically.

The more you earn, the more strategy matters.

Imagine a successful LA couple in their 50s. They built a business together, accumulated significant retirement assets, and spent years putting a thoughtful estate plan in place.

After a major life transition, they updated their wills to reflect their current family and their wishes. They felt confident they had taken care of everything.

But there was one detail they missed: the beneficiary designation on an old retirement account.

Years earlier, the account had named a former spouse.

When one spouse unexpectedly passed away, the other discovered the retirement account designations didn’t simply follow the wishes outlined in their updated will.

The financial consequences were significant. But the emotional impact was just as difficult.

At an already painful time, the family was left navigating an unexpected complication involving assets they believed were meant to support their future.

The lesson? Estate planning isn't just about creating a will. It's about making sure all the pieces of your financial plan work together.

For affluent families and business owners, that coordination can become increasingly important as wealth, business interests, retirement accounts, and legacy goals become more complex.

At HCR, holistic financial planning helps bring these moving pieces together so your strategy reflects the legacy you want to leave behind: https://hcrwealth.com/about-us/our-services/

Because protecting your legacy isn't just about deciding where your wealth goes. It's about making sure your wishes are actually carried out.

It can be tempting to wait until December to take a comprehensive look at your finances.

But some of the most valuable planning opportunities exist before year-end.

Here are 5 numbers to know before Q4:

Net worth: How has your balance sheet changed since January?
Savings rate: Are you retaining and directing capital in a way that supports your long-term objectives?
Cash reserves: Is your liquidity appropriate for your spending needs, upcoming obligations, and broader financial plan?
Investment allocation: Has market performance caused your portfolio to drift from its intended allocation?
Year-to-date tax picture: Are there tax planning opportunities that should be considered while there’s still time to act?

None of these figures tells the complete story on its own. Their value comes from putting them into context and understanding how they connect to your broader financial strategy.

For affluent individuals and families, that context becomes increasingly important as investments, taxes, liquidity, estate considerations, and major financial decisions become more interconnected.

At HCR, we take a comprehensive approach to your financial picture, helping you connect these individual pieces into a holistic, structured support system: https://hcrwealth.com/about-us/our-services/

Fall is a great time to reset your financial habits, revisit your goals, and make sure your money is working with the life you want, not against it.

A budget reset, a cash cushion, money and mindset goals, a portfolio review, and a little more intention behind your spending. A fall financial refresh today can help create more financial flexibility tomorrow.

Because enjoying the LA lifestyle is even better when your financial plan can keep up with it.
