What if your financial planner could help you with more than just the numbers? đź’

I've been having some interesting conversations with financial planners about what it might look like to include more emotional support in the financial planning process.

Because when it comes to money, our emotions, experiences, and Money Stories often play just as big a role as the numbers themselves.

And it's made me curious...

How would you feel if your financial planner had a financial therapist as part of their team?

Would you feel more supported? Curious about how it might work? Or maybe it's something you've never considered before?

I'd really love to hear what you think!

I've put together a short, anonymous survey that takes about a minute to complete. Your answers will help me better understand what people actually want and need when it comes to the emotional side of financial planning.

There are no right or wrong answers, and you don't need to know anything about financial therapy to participate.

Would you take a minute to share your thoughts with me?

Thank you for helping me explore what more compassionate, whole-person financial planning could look like!

👻 What’s haunting your Money Story?

Have you ever noticed yourself reacting to money in a way that doesn't quite make sense, even to you?

Maybe you avoid checking your bank account, feel guilty after spending money, or find yourself worrying about money even when things seem to be going okay.

I like to think of our Money Shadows as the parts of our relationship with money that we don't always see or understand. The beliefs, fears, and patterns we've picked up throughout our lives that can quietly influence the decisions we make today.

And sometimes, those patterns have been with us for so long that we don't even recognize them anymore.

This is why I believe talking about money is so important. Not just the numbers, but the feelings and experiences underneath them.

When we give ourselves permission to talk about these things, we can begin to understand where our Money Stories came from and whether they're still serving us.

In my approach to financial therapy, we explore these patterns with compassionate curiosity and zero judgment. You don't have to have all the answers, and you certainly don't have to figure it all out on your own.

If you're curious about your own Money Shadow and would like a safe place to begin talking about your relationship with money, I'd love to meet you.

Sometimes, what we're buying isn't really what we're buying.

I know that sounds a little strange, but stay with me.

When we're shopping for someone, especially during the holidays, we're often trying to communicate something through the purchase.

Maybe it's "I care about you." Maybe it's "I appreciate you." Or, like the gift swap example I share in this video, maybe it's simply "I'm happy to be part of this."

And suddenly, there's a lot more riding on that purchase than just finding something to wrap.

What if they don't like it? What if they misunderstand what I meant? What if I didn't spend enough?

This is one of the ways shopping anxiety can show up, and it's something I encourage people to get curious about in my approach to financial therapy.

Not to judge the purchase or talk yourself out of buying something, but to understand what you're hoping that purchase will do for you.

If you'd like to explore this a little further, I have a free resource called Tips to Decrease Shopping Anxiety Today. It includes a video exercise and journaling worksheet to help you better understand your own shopping experiences.

As we head into the holiday season, I want to invite you to think about something a little differently this year.

What story do you want your holiday spending to tell?

Maybe it's a story of generosity, connection, or creating memories with the people you love. Or maybe it's a story of giving yourself permission to do a little less this year.

Holiday spending can bring up so much more than we expect. There's the pressure to find the perfect gifts, the guilt of feeling like we haven't done enough, and sometimes the fear of disappointing people we care about.

And often, underneath all of that, there's a Money Story at work.

One of the things I love about my approach to financial therapy is helping people get curious about these stories. Where did they come from? Are they still serving you? And what might change if you gave yourself permission to make a different choice?

You don't have to have it all figured out before the holidays arrive. But you can start getting curious now.

If you'd like some support exploring your relationship with money before the holiday season gets into full swing, I'd love to meet you. You can learn more about my free 20-minute Discovery Call here:

I'm curious, what do you want your money to make room for this holiday season?

One of my favorite questions to ask around money is: “Whose money is it?”

Not because the answer is always complicated, but because our first reaction can tell us a lot.

We may think about who needs it, who gave it to us, or what someone else would want us to do with it before we ever stop to ask what we want.

Ever feel anxious about spending money before you've even made the purchase?

Maybe you find yourself going back and forth, wondering whether you really need something, whether you can afford it, or whether you'll regret buying it later.

In my approach to financial therapy, I encourage you to get curious about what's happening underneath those thoughts.

What are you feeling? What are you hoping the purchase will give you? And how does this decision fit into the life you want to create?

These questions can help you create a little space between the feeling and the purchase.

And remember, the goal isn't to make every money decision perfectly. It's to begin making choices with more intention, self-understanding, and compassion.

If you'd like to explore a new way of approaching your financial decisions, my FREE resource, Get the Life You Want with the Money You Have, is a wonderful place to start.

What if part of you wants more money, but another part believes having money makes you a bad person?

Maybe you grew up hearing that wealthy people are greedy, selfish, or morally bankrupt.

And maybe, without even realizing it, that belief has been shaping your relationship with money ever since.

One of the things we explore in my approach to financial therapy is the idea that a belief may or may not be a truth.

When we begin questioning those beliefs with abundant compassionate curiosity and zero judgment, we can start to understand the tension they may be creating in our financial lives.

Especially when we're navigating something as emotionally complex as receiving wealth.

đź’ What beliefs about money have you carried into adulthood?

In this week's blog, I'm exploring how our Money Stories, family dynamics, and deeply held beliefs can influence the way we experience wealth transfer—and how my approach can help us navigate those patterns.

“I'll be good this week.”
“I blew it.”
“I need to be stricter.”
“I'll start over Monday.”

Sound familiar?

Sometimes, the way we talk about money sounds remarkably similar to the way we talk about food.

We create rules to feel more in control. When we can't stick to them, guilt and shame creep in. So we make another promise, set another restriction, and hope this time will be different.

But have you ever stopped to wonder where those rules came from in the first place?

Our relationships with money and food are often shaped by years of experiences, emotions, and beliefs we may not even realize we're carrying.

In my approach to financial therapy, I help you explore what's underneath your money habits with curiosity and compassion, so you can begin building a relationship with money that feels more supportive and sustainable.

You don't have to keep starting over every Monday. đź’š

“We'll talk about the inheritance later.”

But what happens when later never comes?

Money conversations within families can be complicated by years of unspoken expectations, grief, guilt, and the Money Stories we've carried since childhood.

I've seen how two family members can sit down to discuss the exact same inheritance and walk away having experienced two completely different conversations.

That's why I often encourage people to start by “talking about talking about it.”

Before getting into the numbers, ask:

đź’š What feels difficult to say?
đź’š What are we afraid might happen?
đź’š What would help this conversation feel safer?

We spend so much time preparing the financial side of a wealth transfer. It's important that we prepare the people involved, too.

In Part 2 of my Wealth Transfer Dynamics series, I'm exploring three common challenges that can make giving or receiving wealth so emotionally complicated.

Sometimes the thing keeping you from dealing with money isn’t the money itself.

It’s the thought that says, “I should already know how to do this.”

Maybe it’s figuring out how to log into an account. Opening a statement you’ve been avoiding. Making a phone call. Asking a question that feels like something you should already know.

So you put it off.

Six months pass. Then a year.

And now there’s shame about the original question and shame about how long you’ve waited.

This is one of the reasons removing judgment is such an important part of my approach to financial therapy. We can’t go back and change what you didn’t do six months ago—but we can get curious about what made it so difficult and help you begin from where you are today.

I loved talking with Mitch from Legacy After Loss Financial about this on his Wins for Widows podcast, where we explored what can happen to our relationship with money after loss and how avoidance can show up in everyday financial tasks.
