Every June 14th, we celebrate the Stars and Stripes on Flag Day. While we’re all familiar with the United States’ flag, we might not know all of the history behind this symbol.

To celebrate, we wanted to share a few fun facts about the history of the flag that might surprise you:

🔹 The current 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old. Robert G. Heft of Lancaster, Ohio, submitted the design as a high school project in 1958. It was chosen by President Eisenhower out of more than 3,000 submissions in 1960.

🔹 There have been 27 official versions of the flag. Twenty-five of those changes were solely to update the number of stars every time a new state joined the Union. The star additions were admitted on July 4th, and, together, they give us a rich visual history of the country's growth over time.

🔹 The colors for the flag have taken on their own meanings over the years. Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress in 1774, suggested that red represents hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

🔹 Six American flags have been planted on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin were the first, but five additional Apollo missions have also left a flag on the lunar surface.

🔹 The current design is the longest-running version in history. No new states have been added since Hawaii joined the union in 1959, making this the most enduring flag design the country has ever had.

Wishing you a wonderful Flag Day filled with pride and appreciation for the history behind the flag we share.

I need help, but I think this may be just a guy problem but I could be wrong.

I had an awkward experience recently where I saw someone I had not seen in quite awhile. I went forward planning a fist bump.

He came forward expecting a hand shake.

To say the exchange was clumbsy is an understatement.

Here is where I need help. How do you know? Serisously, how do you know when it is right to come in for a fist bump and how do you know when to go full on hand shake mode?

I am the worst at making this decision and find myself picking the wrong one almost every time and I end up with grabbing a fist and shaking and pretending that's not weird.

Please shed some light. What is the secret?

Want the secrets for maximizing the next mortgage? That you can call me for. This, I am at a total loss......

June is filled with moments that remind us how courage, innovation, and a little bit of daring can leave a lasting mark on history. Here are a few milestones we are reflecting on this month:

🚀 June 18, 1983 - Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, launching aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger as a mission specialist. Out of more than 8,000 applicants, she was one of only six women selected for NASA's 1978 astronaut class.

🏀 June 6, 1946 - The Basketball Association of America was founded at a meeting in New York City, setting the stage for what would eventually become the NBA and for basketball to transform from a regional gym sport into a global phenomenon.

🎥 June 20, 1975 - Stephen Spielberg’s classic “Jaws” premiered. Not only did this movie become one of the first big summer blockbusters at movie theaters, but it also gifted us with one of the most iconic movie soundtracks of all time.

These moments continue to inspire conversations about leadership, equality, creativity, and the lasting impact of a single bold step on the world.

I gave up drinking alcohol when I was 3. Yes, 3 years old.

I may have had a drink or two after this little event, but never wasted and never after I turned 20 so I pretty much got my partying phase done by 3.

It's true. My proud dad took his young son (me) out quail hunting. This is when disaster struck for my dad. I was thirsty. He opened the little cooler in the front seat of the truck and all he spied were chilled beer cans. No water. No soda. Just beer.

The thought that went through his mind was that he could give me a beer and I would have a drink or two and I would give it back to him. I did have a drink or two. I did give it back to him.

EMPTY.

I was blitzed when we finally found some birds to chase. The problem was that I could not walk straight and there was cactus everywhere. It was time to head home.

It was time to face mom. I was probably passed out so I don't recall how it all went down when my dad got home with a drunk 3 year old, but needless to say, mom was not a happy camper.

Dad learned his lesson. There was always a soda or water with those beers going forward. If you ever wondered, man, what's wrong with that guy Jim, this may be your answer.

There are 2 beautiful pieces to this story. We can learn from our mistakes first of all. Isn't that what this life is all about.

Secondly, those mistakes can make for some of the best stories ever once you get far enough away from them. Who does not love a fantastic redemption story? It's not a redemption story in the middle of the mess. It's a redemption story when you make it out the other side and you can reflect back on it.

Dad survived. Jim survived. Mom forgave. Now we laugh.

I did something crazy.

I went to the mountains. Drove home. No noise. No music. No podcast. No radio. Me and the taco cruising down the road for 2.5 hours.

I needed some quiet time. Sometimes life gets loud. Social media, text messages, phone calls, emails, TV, music, podcasts, the voice in your head.

I needed the noise to stop so I went to the woods.

When is the last time you drove for 2+ hours on silent mode? If you are unsure, give it a whirl.

Quite refreshing if I do say so myself.

I don't want to get old apparently, as evidenced by my recent shoe purchase.

So what did I do. I opted to buy some cool kid shoes instead of the old man comfortable ones.

I am now rethinking my life's choices wondering why I didn't just get the comfy ones. Who I am trying to impress?

I felt kinda cool buying some Jordan's for myself though. A real breakthrough moment for me. ($20 bucks out of my pocket after my $25 gift card so it was not too painful)

If you are looking for that feels so good comfortable kind of experience with your next home loan, look for the aging guy in some Jordan's with a little hitch in his step because the shoes are a little stiff, but dang it, they look good right?

Elk hunting saved me.

Okay, maybe that's a tad dramatic, but did it pull me out of a dark place and as such, became something I love more than I could imagine.

It was 2018. Our oldest son was just about to leave for 2 years to a foreign country to learn a new language and culture and share the word of God. He was anxious. One of my good friends just died. Lung cancer. The dude made me put hand sanitizer on my hands when I would ride in his car. He was a surgeon and a germaphobe that weighed the same ever since he graduated high school. Never smoked a day in his life or drank alcohol and he was taken from this world all too soon by lung cancer.

Funeral was Saturday. Our son left on Wednesday. I drove to the mountains to help on my brother's elk hunt on Thursday.

While on the side of a mountain after enduring a fall shower, I snapped this double rainbow picture. A few minutes later, I got a text. Mary Louise had passed away. I was asked to speak at her funeral. She was an older lady from church we visited every week and now she was gone as well. A Friend. A Son. Another Friend. All gone in the space of this two weeks.

Not to mention, the final day of this elk hunt was dad's 10 year anniversary of his passing away. I thought a miracle was going to happen that night. We were surrounded by bugles and the right opportunity never came to pass.

This specific elk hunt did somethign to me at the core. It gave me something to enjoy and look forward to in a time of loss and mourning. Elk hunting has never been the same since that hunt. It has become so much more than chasing elk around the mountain. It heals my soul somehow and someway. Jenny even asked me after my last elk hunt, do you even want to get one? Yes, I do, but I am also 100% good with just living the experience.

No, I don't want you to get into elk hunting becuase I want a tag and I am not looking for more competition.

What I am saying is find your thing. Riding a bike. Hiking. Running. Exercise. Meditation. Find that thing that gets you through those tough times so you can see the beauty of the double rainbow on the other side of the storm.

I have been practicing this lately and I love it.

When you have a complaint, make it, and then force yourself to finish with the phrase, "But at least" and name 3 things you are grateful for.

I heard this on a podcast (and I can't remember which one or who said it) but it gives space for the complaint and replaces it with gratitude.

It forces me to focus on a positive instead of dwell on a negative.

As Mrs. Hurn would encourage in high school calculus, let's take a specific example that I am dealing with right now:

I hate buying tires for the car, but at least I have a car to buy tires for, and at least I have the money to buy them, and at least I don't have to buy tires every month. :) I feel better already.

Discount Tire here I come.
