If you want to avoid a “zero-pay claim,” here’s a simple checklist to keep in mind:

Not every hailstorm should lead to an insurance claim.

If the damage does not exceed your deductible, a claim can still be recorded, even if no payment is made. This is called a “zero-pay claim,” and it can stay on your record, which translates to increased premiums. Of course, always have the roof inspected for any leaks after a hailstorm, but if it's too early in the season you might want to hold off until the season ends. Two hail claims in the same year almost certainly guarantees the risk of your carrier dropping you.

Better first steps:

One quick thing to know before storm season: collision and comprehensive coverage are not the same.

Collision = accidents with another car or object
Comprehensive = the “everything else” coverage

That includes things like:
▪️ Hail damage
▪️Theft or vandalism
▪️A deer running into you, which is more common than you might think in Colorado
