One Project Every Year For Five Years

We did not buy a perfect home. We built one — one renovation at a time.

Kitchen. Bathroom. Back patio. One cash project every single year for five years. By the time we were ready to sell we had equity we never could have planned for.

That is the part nobody talks about when they say starter homes are not worth it.

What is one thing you would renovate first if you bought a home today?

Bought At $312K. Walked Away With $250K.

There is no way we could have saved $250,000 while renting. It just would not have happened.

We bought a starter home, paid down the mortgage, sold it, and walked away with a quarter million. That money went into a 529 for the kids, a brokerage account, and a private wealth fund.

One starter home changed the entire financial trajectory of our family.

It Is Okay To Rent

This is the unpopular opinion most loan officers will never say out loud.

Renting is not always the wrong move. If your income is not stable or you are moving in two or three years, renting might be the smarter call right now.

The goal is not to buy as fast as possible. The goal is to buy at the right time.

What Are You Actually Waiting For?

Waiting to save up for your dream home sounds responsible. But what is it actually costing you?

Every year you wait is a year you are not building equity. A starter home gets you in the game while your money works for you instead of your landlord.

Honest answer? Some days I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Not because the 90s were better. Half of it was a pain and I’m not giving up modern medicine or my business.
But back then you actually saw people. You called your friends and made a plan and showed up. You sat at dinner without a rectangle buzzing in your pocket. You were bored sometimes and boredom is where half my best ideas used to come from.

We traded all of that for convenience and told ourselves it was progress.

And in a lot of ways it was. But we also ended up more connected to everyone and close to almost no one. Every study says the same thing, we’re lonelier than we’ve ever been, right as we got the most
“connected” we’ve ever been.
So no, I don’t actually want to go back. I want to take the best part of that era, real people in real rooms, and drag it into this one on purpose.
