Shield AI is building a new facility in Des Moines, Washington, in the Puget Sound region, to produce its X-BAT, an uncrewed, AI-piloted fighter jet that takes off and lands vertically. The site is under construction and is slated to begin operations in March 2027, according to KOMO News.
The company is targeting a mission-capability demonstration in 2028 and full production in 2029. The Des Moines site will build airframes, components, test vehicles, systems and avionics, while flight testing and maintenance will be based at Shield AI's facility in Newton, Kansas, with flight testing expected to begin around the end of 2026.
Shield AI's Armor Harris says the U.S. Navy is driving the program, with $200 million in development funding already committed. The company projects about 8,000 jobs in the region by 2030; those figures are company estimates, contingent on the plan proceeding as laid out.
The X-BAT is flown by Shield AI's Hivemind autonomy software, a notable step as the company moves toward producing its own aircraft at scale.
Shield AI is a holding of HUDSONPOINT capital clients.
