This week The Wall Street Journal looked at merchant cash advances. That’s financing sold to business owners with lines like cash in 24 hours, easy application, past credit trouble, no problem.
One of those advances had an estimated yearly rate of 2,190%. Payments came straight out of owners’ bank accounts every day or every week, even when payroll was due. And in more than half of this year’s small-business bankruptcies, an MCA company was one of the creditors.
You may not own a business. But you’ve heard the same pitch somewhere else: Instant approval. No credit check. Money today. It’s on payday apps, store cards, “skip a payment” offers, and 0% balance transfers that quietly end after 12 months.
So here’s what needs clearing up: how fast the money comes tells you nothing about what it costs. When an offer says a lot about speed and almost nothing about cost, that’s on purpose.
We do it the other way around. Before you talk to anyone, and before you give a name or an email, you can see the numbers: what one payment could look like, and the month your last card gets paid off. It takes 30 seconds, with no credit check, and nothing gets sent anywhere.
Cost first. Then you decide.
