Wrapping Up Our August Highlight on United Rehabilitation Services (URS)

As we close out the month of August, we are reflecting on the incredible impact United Rehabilitation Services (URS) of Greater Dayton has built across our region since 1956.

What truly sets URS apart is its "One Roof" model on Old Troy Pike. Instead of families driving all over the Miami Valley to piece together care, URS offers a complete continuum, from specialized childcare and therapies to adult day programs, employment services, and senior care, all under a single roof.

A family never "ages out" of support; they simply transition into the next stage of life with a team that already knows their story.

Here is a look at what makes this organization so vital to our community:

* Comprehensive Therapy Services: Licensed clinicians provide physical, occupational, speech, and aquatic therapy under the same roof as daily programs. In 2025 alone, URS delivered 654 therapy visits (220 physical, 215 occupational, and 219 speech), meeting individuals exactly where they are to build mobility, communication, and independence.

* Empowering Employment Services: URS helps bridge the gap between ability and opportunity. Starting early with high school youth career exploration, they provide job coaching and placement services that maintain a success rate significantly exceeding statewide averages. In 2025, they supported 223 individuals working toward financial independence and meaningful careers.

* True Community Integration: Real inclusion happens out in the community. In 2025, URS facilitated roughly 450 community outings and hosted open events like Prom, karaoke nights, and holiday dances, welcoming neighbors and friends alongside URS participants to foster genuine belonging.

How You Can Help Support URS?
None of this happens without local support! 100% of proceeds from duck adoptions stay local to fund these essential programs.

Monday Motivation Mindset

"When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."

Franklin D. Roosevelt

When you are going through a tough stretch, it is completely normal to feel like throwing in the towel. But pushing through those heavy moments is where real strength, character, and progress are built.

Quitting gives up all the ground you have already gained. When things get difficult, don't focus on the whole mountain—just focus on taking the very next step forward.

As we start this new week, keep pushing through the resistance. The rough patches are temporary, but the toughness you build by staying in the fight stays with you forever.

What is one strategy or reminder that helps you stay grounded when times get tough? Drop it in the comments below! 💬

DreamBuilder Highlight: URS R.I.S.E. Program 🌟

At United Rehabilitation Services (URS), growth doesn't stop after childhood.

This year, URS's Adult Day Services launched R.I.S.E. (Readiness, Independence, Support, Empowerment) a personal training and adapted fitness program built specifically for adults with disabilities.

R.I.S.E. brings real strength training, movement, and recreation into daily programming, tailored to each person's unique abilities and goals. It isn't a generic exercise class, it is individualized coaching designed to build real physical gains and lasting confidence.

Take Shamarri, a participant in Adult Day Services. When he first tried the PhysioStep recumbent cross trainer, he couldn't complete a single full cycle. Since starting R.I.S.E., he has built up to 0.17 miles in a single session! He shows up ready to work every time, leaves with a smile, and his family and staff have watched his progress with immense pride.

R.I.S.E. had a soft start in 2025 and continues to grow through 2026, giving more adults at URS the opportunity to build strength, independence, and confidence right alongside their peers.

How You Can Help Support Programs Like R.I.S.E.:

Adopt a duck for the 23rd Annual URS Rubber Duck Regatta on September 19 at RiverScape MetroPark! Every adoption directly supports incredible programs like this one.

Cornerstone Commerce: Spotlight on the Vandalia-Butler Chamber of Commerce 🏛️🤝

This week for our Cornerstone Commerce feature, we are turning the spotlight over to our friends and partners at the Vandalia-Butler Chamber of Commerce!

Led by President Nick Kavalauskas and a dedicated board, the Vandalia-Butler Chamber plays a vital role in connecting local business owners, driving economic momentum, and creating fun, meaningful ways for members to network and build relationships across our region.

Speaking of networking and building connections, if you’ve ever attended the Chamber Coffee on the first Friday of the month, you know board member John Wheeler is usually the one going around collecting business cards for drawings and intros.

Well, Nick Kavalauskas took things to another level recently by dressing up as John, basket and all!

It is that spirit of community and connection that makes being a part of our local chambers so special.

🏛️ Featured Upcoming Event: Legislative Day 2026

The Vandalia-Butler Chamber is partnering with the Northern Chamber Coalition (including Northmont Area, Brookville Area, Trotwood, and Huber Heights Chambers) for an impactful morning with state, county, and federal representatives!

* Date: Thursday, August 27, 2026
* Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
* Location: Christian Life Center (3489 Little York Rd, Dayton, OH 45414)
* Keynote Speaker: U.S. Congressman Mike Turner
* Legislative Panel: Phil Plummer, Willis Blackshear, Rodney Creech, Carolyn Rice, Karl Keith, and John McManus.

Whether you're looking for high-level advocacy, networking, or just great local business relationships, active involvement with the Vandalia-Butler Chamber is a fantastic way to grow your business.

Tip Tuesday: Protecting Your Property Before Season Changes 🍂

HVAC & Plumbing Checklist
Preventative maintenance is always cheaper than emergency repairs whether you are managing a household or running a commercial shopfront.

Simple steps to protect your property this month:

* Swap Filters Early: Replace HVAC filters every 30 to 60 days to keep energy bills low and extend equipment life.

* Inspect Water Lines: Check exposed pipes, hoses, and water heaters for small leaks or corrosion before temperatures drop.

* Clear Gutters & Drainage: Ensure downspouts direct water at least 5 feet away from foundations to prevent water intrusion.

Taking an hour this week to inspect your property can save thousands in avoidable damage down the road.

What is one annual maintenance task you never skip? Drop it in the comments below! 💬

Monday Motivation Mindset 💪🏾

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

Winston Churchill

It is easy to get caught up in the weekly hustle, checking off to-do lists, chasing goals, and focusing on what comes in.

Real success isn't defined by what we accumulate; it is measured by the value we add to the lives of others and the strength we build in our community.

Whether it is donating time, helping a neighbor, or backing local non-profits and small businesses, the investments we make in others build a stronger, more connected community for all of us.

As we start this new week, let's focus on how we can show up, serve, and give back.

What is one local organization, non-profit, or community cause in our area that you love supporting?

Drop their name in the comments so we can highlight them! 💬

DreamBuilder of The Month Feature: On-Site Nursing & Inclusive Childcare 🌟

United Rehabilitation Services isn’t just another daycare. URS operates the only childcare program in the state of Ohio with on-site nursing care built directly into daily operations.

That means children with complex medical needs, feeding tubes, seizure disorders, mobility challenges, and more can attend the same classrooms as their typically developing peers with licensed nursing staff on-site every single day.

The program serves children from 6 weeks through age 17, and holds a Gold-Star rating which is Ohio’s highest quality rating for early childhood programs.

Kids grow up together here: a child with Down syndrome and a child with no diagnosis sit at the same table, nap in the same room, and celebrate the same milestones.

That kind of true inclusion, backed by full medical support, is incredibly rare anywhere in the country, right here in Dayton’s backyard. For families who have been told “we can’t accommodate your child’s needs,” URS says yes.

Tip Tuesday

If you have a student heading off to college this fall, do not forget to update your auto insurance policy before they pack up the car.

Leaving for school changes your household driving risk, and depending on your setup, it could either leave you with an exposed coverage gap or save you money on your premium.

Here are three quick things to check with your agent before move-in day:

The 100-Mile Discount: If your student is moving to a campus more than 100 miles away and leaving their car parked at home, you may qualify for a "Student Away at School" discount. They remain covered when they visit on breaks, but your rate drops significantly while they are away.

Changing the Vehicle Location: If your child is taking a car with them to campus, you must update the vehicle's primary location on your policy. Insurance rates are based on zip codes, and failing to update the location could cause severe delays or issues if they get into an accident away from home.

Good Grade Discounts: Most major carriers offer discounts for full-time students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Make sure to send a copy of their latest transcript to your agent to lock in those savings.

A quick 5-minute policy update before campus move-in keeps your college student protected and makes sure your household isn't overpaying.
