Remember the last time the power went out for days?
Backup generators keep operations running, but they bring their own risks: fire hazards, fuel leaks, carbon monoxide and code compliance issues.

Before winter weather hits, check that your generator:

❄️Has at least 5 feet of clearance from doors, windows and vents (per NFPA 37)
❄️Sits on a stable, noncombustible surface, elevated if you’re in a flood-prone area
❄️Has exhaust directed safely away from building openings
❄️Is tested and maintained on a regular schedule
❄️Stores fuel according to fire and environmental requirements

Fall brings changing leaves (even in Texas), and new hazards on the road.

Lower sun angles create intense glare right at commute time. Shorter days mean more driving in the dark. Wet leaves can be as slick as ice and hide potholes and lane markings. And deer are most active at dawn and dusk this time of year.

Quick reminders for your drivers:
🚗 Keep sunglasses handy and your windshield clean
🚗 Headlights on at dusk and on overcast days
🚗 Slow down and add following distance on leaf-covered roads
🚗 Use low beams in fog
🚗 If a deer appears, brake, don’t swerve

Fire Prevention Week: Electrical Maintenance

Today marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the event that inspired Fire Prevention Week more than a century ago.

Fire risks look different today, but one constant remains: electrical issues are a leading cause of commercial property fires. Loose connections, overloaded circuits and aging equipment can overheat quietly for months before something goes wrong.

That's where an Electrical Preventive Maintenance (EPM) program comes in. Regular, scheduled inspections of wiring, breakers, panels and equipment help catch problems before they cause a fire. Many businesses also use infrared thermography, a non-invasive scan that spots hidden "hot spots" in electrical systems that the naked eye can't see.

The payoff goes beyond safety: less downtime, longer equipment life, better energy efficiency and fewer costly surprises.

Prevention is always less expensive than recovery. Let's talk about building it into your risk management plan.

Fire Prevention Week: Sprinkler Systems

Your sprinkler system is only as good as its maintenance.

According to NFPA data, effective sprinkler systems can reduce fire deaths and property loss by more than 65%. But a system that's obstructed, damaged or shut off can't do its job when it matters most.

A few Fire Prevention Week checks for your facility:
🔹 Keep sprinkler heads clear of stacked inventory, shelving and decorations
🔹 Never paint, hang items from or tape over sprinkler heads
🔹 Confirm control valves are locked in the open position 🔹 Schedule regular professional inspections and quarterly alarm testing
🔹 Inspect fire extinguishers and keep them easy to reach

Cybersecurity Awareness Month | Week 1: Strong Passwords

Cybercriminals are very good at guessing simple passwords, and a single weak login can open the door to your entire network.
Strong passwords are:
✔️ At least 16 characters long
✔️ Random, using uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols
✔️ Unique for every account (no recycling!)

That sounds like a lot to remember, which is exactly why password managers exist. These secure programs create strong passwords, store them safely and fill them in automatically, so your employees only need to remember one master password.

Quick challenge for your team this week: identify any shared or reused passwords on work accounts and replace them.
