Some good news to close out the month: workplace fatalities in the U.S. dropped again this year, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, continuing a positive multi-year trend.

Most of the improvement came from fewer substance-related workplace incidents, while transportation incidents remain the single leading cause of on-the-job fatalities overall.

Progress is real, but it's uneven. It's critical to remember both halves of that story: the numbers are moving in the right direction, and there's still a clear place to keep pushing.

A quarter of job candidates could be fake by 2028. That's not a typo, it's a Gartner projection, and it's why "look for typos" isn't useful scam advice for HR teams anymore.

AI has made it cheap to fake almost everything HR deals with: polished phishing emails referencing real internal details, deepfaked voice or video from "leadership," and applicants using AI-generated faces and fabricated resumes straight through a live interview.

A few things that actually help:
👨‍💼 Verify identity through secure, official channels, never a forwarded email attachment
👨‍💼 Confirm any unusual request from "leadership" through a different communication channel before acting on it
👨‍💼 Require multistep approval for payroll, benefits, or access changes, no exceptions for urgency
👨‍💼 Run quarterly micro-trainings using real, current examples rather than an annual refresher

Technology can help flag anomalies, but it's not a substitute for a team that knows to slow down and verify.
That instinct is still the best defense you have.

Teenagers get a bad rap for checking the UV index like it's a beauty forecast, but they're onto something the rest of us should be paying attention to too.

If part of your team works outside, the UV index matters as much as the temperature does. It's a 0-to-11+ scale published daily by the National Weather Service and EPA, and once you hit 6 or above, unprotected skin and eyes start taking real damage.

A few things worth building into an outdoor crew's routine:
☀️ Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, reapplied every two hours
☀️Sunglasses that block 100% of UVA/UVB, wraparound for the best coverage
☀️A wide-brimmed hat with at least a 3-inch brim
☀️Shade breaks between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays peak

Check the index before the shift starts. It takes 10 seconds and it changes how you plan the day.

Most businesses think of Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) as protection against their own employees' claims. It's actually narrower than that, because a growing share of employment practices claims now come from outside the building entirely.

Third-party EPLI covers claims from customers, clients, vendors, or the public, not your own staff, when they allege:
- Harassment
- Discrimination
- Hostile treatment during a business interaction

The claim types look the same as traditional EPLI. The source is what's different, and that difference matters at claim time.

The coverage gap that catches people off guard:
- General liability policies typically exclude employment-related claims entirely
- Standard EPLI policies usually only respond to claims from current, former, or prospective employees
- Without a specific third-party endorsement, a business can be completely uncovered exactly when it needs coverage most
- Defense costs alone on one of these claims often run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's worth having a specific conversation with your broker rather than assuming that it's already covered.

Houston's been under a heat advisory for a week straight now, and anyone working outside or in a warehouse without much airflow already knows it.

Your body loses water constantly through sweat and breathing, and by the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind. Even mild dehydration can throw off your focus and coordination, which is exactly how workplace accidents happen.

A simple rule to build into hot-weather shifts: about a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes, more if the work is physically demanding.

Keep water within reach, take the scheduled breaks, and check in on your coworkers. It's a small habit that prevents a real problem.

Another birthday, another excuse for cake around the JACOBSON office! 🥳 Last week we surprised our own Isabel to celebrate another trip around the sun.

Isabel brings so much energy to our team every day, and we wanted to make sure she knew how much she's appreciated.

Here's hoping this year is one for the memory books, Isabel. We're lucky to have you.

Workers' comp has been one of the more stable, business-friendly lines of coverage for years, and that's still mostly true. But a few things are quietly adding pressure underneath the surface: rising medical costs, more complex claims, and, here in Texas in August, heat-related injury risk that regulators are starting to pay closer attention to.

Businesses with strong safety records and low claims activity are still seeing favorable renewals. Higher-risk industries, or those without a heat safety plan in place, may see that trend start to shift.

If it's been a while since you've reviewed your safety programs with an eye toward what's actually driving claims, this is a good season to do it, especially with the heat we're all dealing with right now.

🚌 School's back in session across the Houston area this month, which means more buses, more crossing guards, and more distracted-driving risk on the road. It's also a good moment to check in on your fleet coverage, because commercial auto has been one of the toughest lines in the industry for a while now.

Rising legal costs and expensive vehicle repairs have kept rates climbing longer than almost any other line of coverage, though increases have started to moderate for businesses with clean driving records. If your fleet has had a few incidents, or operates in a high-litigation area, you may still see steeper renewals.

The good news: businesses that invest in driver safety, GPS tracking, dash cams, regular training, are increasingly being rewarded with better terms. With school zones back in the mix this month, it's worth taking the moment to reinforce safe driving habits. We're always happy to walk through what your renewal might look like before it arrives.

Being awake for 17 hours straight affects your judgment about as much as a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. Stay awake 24 hours, and it's comparable to 0.10%. That's not a metaphor, it's NIOSH's own comparison, and it's why fatigue belongs on the same list as any other workplace hazard.

Nearly 4 in 10 U.S. employees report regular sleep loss, and the National Safety Council estimates about 13% of work injuries are tied to sleep problems. The tricky part is that fatigue makes routine, familiar tasks more dangerous, not less, because familiarity is exactly when attention slips.

❗Watch for the signs: yawning, heavy eyelids, zoning out, slowed reactions, irritability
❗Treat fatigue as a reportable safety issue, not a personal failing
❗Extra caution on high-risk tasks: operating equipment, working at heights, handling hazardous materials
❗Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, and keep the schedule consistent even on days off
❗Watch out for coworkers too, fatigue is easier to spot in someone else than in yourself

A five-minute conversation about fatigue at the start of a shift costs nothing. The alternative can cost a lot more.
