The truth about Fireworks and Grilling this 4th of July:
In 2022, there were 11 deaths and over 10,000 injuries related to fireworks, with 73% of accidents occurring during the 4th of July period. Since 2007, there has been a steady increase in fireworks-related injuries. Research by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) provides more context:
• 15-19 year-olds had the highest rate of emergency- department treated, fireworks-related injuries.
• Hands and fingers were the most injured body parts (29%).
• 38% of emergency department-treated injuries were burns.
We want to see flashes of red, white, and blue fireworks, not the flashing of ambulance lights. Follow these fireworks safety tips to avoid a trip to the ER:
• Never allow children to ignite fireworks or sparklers. Sparklers may seem harmless but can burn at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of a fire or accident.
• Point fireworks away from yourself and others.
• If a firework is malfunctioning or not lighting, do not attempt to relight it. Soak it in water and throw it away.
• When lighting fireworks, light only one at a time. Do not place your body directly over the fuse and make sure to back away quickly.

In recent years, fireworks caused over 19,000 fires and $105 million in direct property damage. This raises the question: “Does home insurance cover fireworks damage?” The answer is generally yes, with some exceptions. Your home insurance policy typically covers damages caused by fireworks. For instance, if a firework starts a fire or damages your property, your policy should cover these damages. If your fireworks injure someone, liability insurance may also provide coverage.

However, coverage is subject to the legality of the fireworks and any exclusions in your policy. Many policies do not cover damage caused by illegal fireworks or wrongful acts. If damage is done purposefully, it will not be covered. Each state has different laws regarding fireworks legality, which can vary by occasion, type of firework, and time of day. For example, in Florida, fireworks are legal on the 4th of July, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Grilling Safety on the 4th of July:
A great way to stay out of the kitchen in the summer is to grill outdoors. The number one rule for grilling is not the secret family recipe for BBQ sauce or those hard to find briquettes – it’s S-A-F-E-T-Y!

The U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 10,600 home structure and outdoor fires involving grills per year from 2014 to 2018. Over the same time period, an estimated average of 19,700 people per year went to hospital emergency departments because of injuries associated with grills or barbecues
Charcoal grills are responsible for the majority of home fires and injuries rather than gas grills, but each type can be dangerous. Significantly reduce your chances of grilling-gone-wrong by following these simple safety precautions.
• Grills should only be used outdoors and at a safe distance from exterior walls, siding, eaves, deck railings, low hanging tree branches, etc.
• Never ever leave a grill unattended when lit or in use.
• Know how to use your grill and regularly inspect gas grills for problems, such as a fuel leak or clogged line.
• Routinely remove grease buildup from grills, and be sure to keep them clean to help prevent flare-ups caused by debris.
• If using a charcoal grill, do not dispose of the coals until they are completely cool, and be sure to put them in a safe, nonflammable container outside your home – not in your garage.
• Be sure to keep kids and pets away from the grill area, and don’t wear loose clothing if you are grilling.
• Always have a fire extinguisher close by and a phone to call 9-1-1 if needed.

Don’t be a dummy this 4th of July!

What can the Mike Tyson / Jake Paul fight tell us about insurance?

If you were like me, my son and 125 million people last Friday night, you were tuned in (streamed in) to watch the historical event at AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas. As brutal as boxing is, it is an amazing sport that requires speed, strength, stamina and intelligence.

I grew up watching “Iron Mike” Tyson display his talent in the ring and at age 58, I was anticipating a battle and expecting an outstanding match. At 58 years old, Iron Mike was obviously not the same fighter he was in his 20’s. If you wonder why a 58 year old would risk his health to fight a young man, I can give you 20 million reasons. He was paid $20 million dollars to lose a fight.

Mike Tyson famously said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face". Then you have to go to your backup plan.
If you were watching the fight on a television, I expect that you were as frustrated as I was….. Resetting the television every 5 minutes because of buffering issues. I quickly learned that my computer did not have the same buffering issues and quickly set up on my computer so my son and I would not miss any of the fights. It was frustrating but glad we had the computer as backup.

Lesson: Always have a backup plan.

We all take blows in life (preverbal punches to the face). We need to have a plan and a backup. No one expects to have a loss however, we use insurance products to protect those things that matter most to us. For most people, our property are our largest assets that build equity year after year. It seems crazy to me to underinsure and / or use an inferior policy to protect something that is so important to us and our families.

Review your policies annually to make sure the coverage you think you have is the coverage you have. Insurance is our backup plan to rebuild / replace our property in the event of a loss

Medicare Part D Premiums Are Increasing for Many But Not All Stand-Alone Plans in 2025, Reflecting Effects of New Premium Stabilization Demonstration

CMS has just released information about Medicare Part D plans for 2025, including plan availability and premiums for the coming year. While CMS’s headline emphasized stability in terms of average Part D premiums, a quick review of the data shows that many insurers are increasing premiums for their stand-alone drug plan offerings, but not across the board. Some major plan sponsors, including Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, are also reducing their stand-alone prescription drug plan offerings, and overall, there will be fewer PDPs in 2025 than in 2024 – 524 plans nationwide, down from 709 in 2024.

Normally the release of the Medicare plan “landscape file” is a somewhat sleepy late September occurrence, but there was greater anticipation of this year’s release due to uncertainty around the impact on premiums of changes to the Part D benefit under the Inflation Reduction Act that are taking effect in 2025. These changes include a new $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket drug spending for Part D enrollees and an increase in the share of high drug costs paid for by insurers. While Part D enrollees stand to benefit from enhanced financial protection for their drug costs, concerns were raised that the changes in the benefit design would lead insurers to significantly increase premiums for Part D coverage, especially for Medicare’s stand-alone prescription drug plans.

A comprehensive KFF analysis will follow in the future, but it appears that premium increases for 2025 were moderated due to a new Biden-Harris administration Part D premium stabilization demonstration for PDPs, which capped premium increases at $35 per month along with other measures. However, looking at premium changes for a few of the more popular plans shows a mixed picture across plans, with premium decreases in some cases (based on premiums in California; monthly premiums and premium changes vary by state).

-The monthly premium for the most popular PDP nationally, Wellcare Value Script, is increasing by $17 in California, from $0.40 to $17.40.

-The second most popular PDP, Aetna’s SilverScript SmartSaver, will no longer be offered nationwide in 2025. Enrollees in that plan will be switched into Aetna’s sole PDP offering for 2025, SilverScript Choice, unless they choose a different plan, and their monthly premium will increase from $18.60 to $53.60, a $35 increase. But enrollees currently in SilverScript Choice will see their premium decrease by $1.60 between 2024 and 2025.

-Enrollees in another popular PDP, Humana’s Value Rx Plan, will see their premiums increase by $35, from $59 to $94.

At most, stand-alone drug plan premiums are increasing by $35 per month over 2024 levels, due to the premium stabilization demonstration. According to CMS, virtually all PDP enrollees are in plans sponsored by insurers that opted to participate in the voluntary demonstration. In the absence of this demonstration, premium increases would certainly have been larger. In California, enrollees in 8 of the 16 national PDPs offered in 2024 will see their premiums increase by $35 if they do not switch to a different plan in 2025, while enrollees in 6 other national PDPs in 2024 will see a premium reduction.With4 57% of all Part D enrollees in Medicare Advantage drug plans in 2024 and 43% in stand-alone PDPs, most Part D enrollees are not likely to face increases of this magnitude. This is because Medicare Advantage plans can use rebate dollars from the federal government to reduce premiums for prescription drug coverage. According to CMS, Medicare Advantage drug plan premiums for 2025 are holding steady at considerably lower levels than stand-alone drug plans, on average, with many plans charging zero premium as in previous years.

Changes in plan availability and premium increases for some of the more popular stand-alone drug plans are likely to bring about substantial enrollment shifts in the PDP market during this year’s open enrollment period, more so than in previous years when plan availability and premium changes overall were more modest. It’s also possible that premium increases for PDPs will lead to more enrollees switching from traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage drug plans, accelerating the steady growth in the Medicare Advantage market.
