Sergeant Daniel Den Betsui's life is a defining Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander story — a Hawaiʻi-born Japanese American who volunteered to serve a nation that had doubted him, then gave his life for it on Italian soil in 1944. On this Memorial Day, his belated recognition as a commissioned officer serves as both an honor and a long-overdue apology from the country he never stopped believing in.

In Hawai‘i, we especially remember the legacy of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team—local Japanese American soldiers whose courage and sacrifice during World War II became part of our islands’ history. We also honor the generations who have served through Hawai‘i’s National Guard, Reserve units, and military communities across the islands, answering the call to protect and serve with deep kuleana and aloha.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country – with our deepest gratitude and respect.
