As the storm system in the Gulf continues to develop, several of our insurance carriers have begun placing temporary restrictions on writing new policies in certain areas of Mississippi. This is a common practice before potential tropical weather and is known as a binding suspension.

Now is the time to call. Additional carriers may suspend binding with little notice, and once those restrictions are in place, we may not be able to start new coverage until the suspension is lifted.

🚗 What Does “Full Coverage” Really Mean in Mississippi?

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is, “I have full coverage, so I’m covered for everything.”

The truth is, “full coverage” isn’t an actual insurance policy. It’s a term people use to describe a combination of coverages that may include:

✅ Liability Coverage – Required by Mississippi law. Helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to others in an accident.

✅ Collision Coverage – Helps pay to repair or replace your vehicle if you’re involved in a collision, regardless of who is at fault (subject to your deductible).

✅ Comprehensive Coverage – Helps protect your vehicle from things other than a collision, such as:
🌪️ Storm damage
🌳 Falling trees
🦌 Hitting a deer
🔥 Fire
🚗 Theft
💥 Vandalism
🌊 Flood damage
🧊 Hail

💡 Here’s something many people don’t realize:

If your vehicle is declared a total loss, your insurance company does not buy you a brand-new replacement vehicle. In most standard auto policies, the settlement is based on the vehicle’s Actual Cash Value (ACV) at the time of the loss not what you originally paid for it and not what it costs to replace it with a new one. Your deductible, if applicable, is also deducted from the settlement.

That’s why it’s important to understand what your vehicle is worth, especially if you have a loan. If you owe more than the vehicle’s Actual Cash Value, you could still be responsible for the remaining balance unless you have GAP coverage.
