Memorial Day is a federal U.S. holiday held on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces. Originally called Decoration Day, it has evolved from Civil War-era traditions into a broader day of national remembrance and the unofficial start of summer.
